HARLINGEN — It’s been a memorable year.

Angela Berry seemed to feel privileged to have experienced a virtual graduation last month. Not everyone can say they’ve done that. Still, the Harlingen High School senior appreciated the opportunity Saturday to Walk the Stage.

“ Actually, I feel proud this happened,” said Angela, 18, who’d just received a hard copy of her diploma at Boggus Stadium.

A little over 400 students stepped onto the stage and took pictures with family members against a backdrop of palms and ferns bouncing in a warm breeze. A woman to the side waved a bright red pom-pom and shouted, “Yay! Woo! Congratulations!”

Principal Vivian Bauer was delighted so many students had turned out for the ceremony. A total of 648 students graduated this year from HHS.

“ I am excited that they got to walk the stage and get their diplomas and I am also excited the families got to walk with them and take pictures,” she said.

Many students had spent years looking forward to that walk across the stage, and when they were told they had to settle for the virtual ceremony, they didn’t take it well.

“ The only thing I wanted to do in high school was walk so I was pretty upset,” said Jacob Cano, 18.

And when he heard about Saturday’s event at Boggus Stadium?

“ It’s awesome!” he said. “I was pretty happy about it.”

He plans to spend the next two years at TSTC getting his basics out of the way before studying business at a university.
