Whether you're looking for performance or public art, GBH Executive Arts Editor Jared Bowen has you covered. He talks through the latest arts and culture events in and around Boston with the Morning Edition team on Arts this Week.
Now playing at the Emerson Colonial Theatre through August 7
"Out of the gate, I have to say, this is an incredibly moving show," Bowen says. "A Beautiful Noise" tells the story of American icon Neil Diamond — whose music can be heard at nearly every Red Sox home game. The show opens up with an older Neil Diamond who sings through his past experiences, telling his story in flashbacks as a younger Neil Diamond takes the stage.
Neil Diamond has been involved with the development of the show from the very beginning. For much of his career, the muician was reluctant to dive into his life — but, Bowen says, a Parkinson's diagnosis changed his mind.
"It was only when he couldn't tour anymore that he was ready to tell his life story," Bowen says.
On view at the Boston Harborwalk in Charlestown Navy Yard through December 2023 for free
A new sculpture exhibit is open to the public, featuring the work of artist Michael Alfano. Twenty of his sculptures are displayed on a mile-long stretch of the Boston Harborwalk, each associated with a philosophical quote. Alfano's work can sometimes take years to craft and often includes audience participation.
"He has a philosophical approach and quotes kind of appear to him," Bowen says. The Charlestown sculptures feature quotes from individuals such as the poet Amanda Gorman, astronomer Carl Sagan and and Rev. Jesse Jackson.
