Oracle Cerner is excited to celebrate clients that have achieved top HIMSS Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) Stage 7 validation, the highest recognition for hospitals that have embraced technology enhancements including the shift from paper to electronic health records (EHR). At a time when the healthcare industry faces significant challenges from slow adoption of technology, to clinician burnout, and to inequities in healthcare access, these hospitals and health systems have prioritized the pursuit of HIMSS achievements and distinguish themselves in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
EMRAM model validations measure clinical outcomes, patient engagement and health-system adoption of EHR technology to support organizational performance and patient health outcomes.
Since 2021, Oracle Cerner has supported more than 20 clients in the HIMSS validation process. Examples of clients adopting technology to support their goals of improving patient safety and satisfaction include:
- Antelope Valley Medical Center in California achieved HIMSS Stage 7 in April 2022. The medical center uses several tools including Oracle Cerner technology for its antimicrobial stewardship program. This allows pharmacists to advance the appropriate use of antimicrobials to support their goals of reducing overall antibiotic use for non-bacterial diseases, optimizing antibiotic use for bacterial infections, and improving patient outcomes while eliminating unnecessary patient-care costs.
- Hutchinson Regional Medical Center (HRMC) in Kansas received a medal from the US Government for outstanding support to patients during the pandemic. HRMC was an early adopter of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies for treating COVID patients with risk factors that increase the chance of severe illness and hospitalization. HRMC is the only health system in Kansas to achieve HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7.
- MLK Community Healthcare in Los Angeles revalidated its HIMSS Stage 7 EMRAM status in December 2021. The MLKCH team was able to make an impact toward its goals of lowering mortality and length of stay and improving compliance to the Sepsis Care Bundles. MLK Community Healthcare received stellar remarks from the HIMSS surveyor, calling the health system a “shining star.”
- Covenant Health in Knoxville is the first health system in Tennessee to have successfully completed dual Stage 7 validations in both the hospital EMRAM and ambulatory O-EMRAM categories. HIMSS conducted multidisciplinary interviews with clinical staff to hear firsthand how implemented technology supports patient safety and effective clinical workflows. Covenant Health also presented several case studies to demonstrate its qualifications for Stage 7 validation.
- California-based Adventist Health Systems, which achieved Stage 7 in February 2022, saw an increase in the incidence of caregivers in ambulatory settings proactively educating and engaging patients and family members on the process of documenting end-of-life wishes using Oracle Cerner technology.
- Intermountain Healthcare, based in Salt Lake City, was the first health system in the world to earn “Triple Stage 7 Organization” status by adding HIMSS' new EMRAM22 Aspirational Maturity Model Standard requirements to its O-EMRAM and AMAM (Adoption Model for Analytics Maturity) Stage 7 achievements. Aiming to transform population health and primary care, Intermountain Healthcare implemented a Reimagined Primary Care (RPC) Model that used data to provide near-real-time information regarding health services to support smooth transitions of care and reduce low-value follow-up care.
- King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KFSH&RC) in Saudi Arabia achieved AMAM Stage 7, showcasing its ability to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to transform patient care. Aiming to improve outpatient no-show rates and increase its average patient satisfaction score, KFSH&RC created an automated AI system for proactive detection of patients with the potential of missing their next appointment. KFSH&RC recently revalidated on HIMSS O-EMRAM Stage 7 and is also a prior Davies Award winner.
- Memorial Hermann Health System, headquartered in Houston, achieved HIMSS Stage 7 in both EMRAM and O-EMRAM. One of its case studies presented to HIMSS surveyors focused on using data and technology to effectively manage safe patient care and support pain management, including opioid stewardship. The health system monitors and analyzes data surrounding the use of opioids and, using Oracle Cerner technology, customized an alert system to notify physicians of risk factors before signing opioid orders.
- Northern Light Health, which achieved its Stage 7 validation in January 2022, is comprised of 10 member hospitals, a single physician-led medical group and 37 primary-care locations. It provides access to healthcare to people across Maine. In 2020, Northern Light identified the need to review medication-related alerts to support effective clinical decision support for care teams. Its clinician-led, data-driven approach to performance improvement and EHR optimization and adoption, assisted by Oracle Cerner technology, helped efforts to reduce alert fatigue among Northern Light care teams.
The HIMSS Davies Award recognizes the thoughtful application of health information and technology to support clinical care delivery, patient outcomes and population health. Client examples include:
