From debris to dazzling sculptures, Mount Vernon man brings new life to trees lost in derecho - kwwl.com

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (KWWL) - For six years, Clint Henik of 'Carve R Way' has been carving wood into works of art, but since the derecho hit, he has seen a big boost in business.

He has created around 25 pieces since the storm hit, and has up to 80 more lined up.

He creates anything from animals, fish, benches and more. He says he just wants to bring some good to a bad situation.

"Many of the trees have been around for generations and generations and they just hate to see it, just chopped down and hauled away so I just try to bring a little life back," Henik said.

Small carvings can take around an hour, but some larger pieces can take a few days to complete.

90 percent of his work is done with a chainsaw and he uses other tools for the smaller details.

"It's just great seeing their reactions," Henik said. "Just from being a stump in the morning and then to this amazing art piece in the afternoon and they just can't believe it and they're just really proud of the piece. It kind of represents them and their family and stuff they'd want to make last and have a piece that lasts forever."
