Riverfront Art Gallery is delighted to present painter Jean Cullinane and photographer Heather Roberson as the Featured Artists in the gallery’s 13th Anniversary Show, running from Friday, September 11 through Sunday, November 8.
Jean Cullinane is well-known regionally for her dynamic use of color, whether in her realistic paintings or in her eye-catching abstracts. For example, Stairs to Heaven, her painting of blue-green bamboo on an orange background is a triptych perfect as a focal point. The realistic portion of Jean’s show also includes many small vignettes of Fall as well as her beautifully-rendered calla lilies, Sisters, and Pears, the 9th piece in her Clusters series.
A portion of Jean’s show, Nature of Color, is her abstract works, vibrant and often with a sense of movement and energy. Essence is radiant in its monochromatic peach palette and Dance of Life suggests the unpredictable rhythm of life and circumstance—structured yet chaotic, divided yet cohesive, and intrinsically interesting.
Photographer Heather Roberson has mastered light, the ultimate challenge in photography. She isn’t averse to arriving at a location before sunrise, as is evidenced in her images Apple Garden Farm and Morning Observer, where the quality of light brings a pervading sense of calmness and peace. Heather says, “Photography is a beautiful art form that keeps us in touch with people and places. It is the creator of emotion, the keeper of memories.” Her show, The Emotions of Photography, lives up to its billing.
Presentation is also key in Heather’s exhibition, with several images printed on metallic papers, giving them an unusual sheen and visual quality, as with Tunnel of Trees, which also has a fairy tale quality due to its sepia toning. Some images are on canvas in float frames, making them like windows looking onto a distant view. A unique image for Heather is her Forest For the Trees, an abstract of a birch grove, created by moving the camera during the shot.
This 13th Anniversary Show is visually stunning, with exceptional works by both artists. If you hesitate to circulate, go to Riverfront’s website where you will be able view all of Jean’s and Heather’s works in the online store. In gallery viewing is currently limited to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00. But don’t let that stop you! Just keep mask and distancing rules.
