Adrian Lenawee Christian didn’t play by logic, reason or sense.
The Cougars threw all conventional wisdom out the window and simply did things that never seemed possible.
With the kind of head-spinning game that aptly summed up its mind-boggling season, Lenawee Christian powered past Suttons Bay 47-0 to capture the Division 1 state championship of eight-player football Saturday at the Brighton Legacy Center.
Not only did Lenawee pitch a shutout on the grand stage, they routed the second-best team in the state and brought home a state championship in their first season as an eight-player program. There was no adjustment phase as Lenawee romped to an 11-0 record and outscored the opposition 592-46.
Suttons Bay (10-1), which had won every game this season by at least 16 points, couldn’t have braced for what was coming in the championship tilt.
The Lenawee defense went wild, notching seven quarterback sacks and 12 tackles for loss, throwing Suttons Bay for 95 yards in losses. Lenawee yielded just 52 yards of total offense while recording its sixth shutout of the season.
Brandon Scott led the charge with 14 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss while Jacobus Keggereis added three tackles for loss. Associated Press Player of the Year Jameson Chesser tallied 11 tackles and nabbed two interceptions, sparking a game-breaking second-quarter spree.
Lenawee owned a modest 12-0 lead but suddenly got in the end zone three times in a dazzling 2:52 span that suddenly put the game in hand at 33-0. Chesser hauled in 57- and 22-yard scoring tosses from Landon Gallant, then Gallant punched in a 1-yard score and rout was on.
Chesser rushed for 52 yards and touchdown on seven carries and turned four receptions into 127 yards and two more scores. Gallant was 10 of 17 passing for 267 yards and three TDs while rushing for 59 yards and a touchdown. Elliott Addleman also had a big game with four catches for 116 yards in the win while Clay Ayers caught a touchdown pass and kicked three PATs.
Hugh Periard led the Suttons Bay defense with eight tackles while Michael Wittman added seven stops. But the Norsemen were forced to settle for state runner-up honors for the second year in a row.
