Springfield marker among 36 new state historical markers approved

Richard Thornburgh, Pennsylvania governor during the Three Mile Island crisis; the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the oldest appellate court in North America; Keith Haring, the internationally recognized and socially engaged pop artist; Piper Aircraft, manufacturer of the J-3 Cubs and World War II L-4 Grasshoppers; and Ford Station Underground Railroad, operated by Erie’s first freedwoman Emma Howell and her escaped husband, James Ford, are among the subjects of the 36 new Pennsylvania Historical Markers approved by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission.

Of those 36 new markers, one was approved for Springfield, Delaware County, to mark the achievements of Caroline Burnham Kilgore (1838 –1909), the first woman admitted to the bar in Pennsylvania.

In 1883, Kilgore was the first woman to practice in a Pennsylvania court in the Orphans’ Courts and later became the fourth woman to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. She fought for 16 years to become a licensed attorney in Pennsylvania and was an active suffragist.

The new markers, selected from 91 applications, will be added to the more than 2,500 familiar blue signs with gold lettering along roads in Pennsylvania.

Since 1946 PHMC’s Historical Markers have chronicled the people, places and events that have affected the lives of Pennsylvanians over the centuries. The signs feature subjects such as Native Americans and early settlers, government and politics, athletes, entertainers, artists, struggles for freedom and equality, factories and businesses, and a multitude of other noteworthy topics.

Pennsylvanians continue to have great interest in the Historical Marker Program, and last year the number of marker nominations submitted nearly doubled. The commission is committed to ensuring that any markers approved can be manufactured and installed prior to considering new nominations.

The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission is the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. For more information on the Pennsylvania Historical Marker Program, visit http://www.PAHistoricalMarkers.com/.

Salvation Army asks citizens to double down Friday

The holiday season tends to magnify the needs of those struggling in the local community. This season The Salvation Army Eastern Pennsylvania & Delaware Division is urging those who can to help folks in need by supporting its annual Red Kettle Campaign.

The organization reports that its Red Kettle donations are down nearly 33%, while requests for assistance have surged more than 40% over this time last year.

“Without the help from our community members, we will not reach that little child who is on the verge of not having a Christmas this year,” said Lt. Col. Larry Ashcraft, divisional commander for The Salvation Army Eastern Pennsylvania & Delaware Division.

The Army has an opportunity to make inroads toward this lagging support. This Friday, Dec. 9, The Salvation Army is challenging community members to help raise $1.5 million through the National Commander’s Challenge by donating to a local participating red kettle, in person or online. The total amount raised in each participating kettle during that day will be matched.

“This is an opportunity to stretch the impact of your gift. Please find your local red kettle on Friday and give what you can,” said Ashcraft. “This long-standing tradition has helped the Army assist our neighbors in need for more than a century, and this year, we need your support more than ever before. Please join us in this important endeavor. Donate what you can to a kettle or online. Ring a bell at a red kettle. Real people are depending on us. Every gift counts.”
