STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The students at P.S. 53 are getting ready to take the stage for the first-ever musical, “The Lion King Kids” on May 30 and May 31. The performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. at the school, located at 330 Durant Avenue.

More than 50 students in grades 3-5 will perform their first-ever musical at PS 53, as part of “Disney Musicals in Schools.”

Their original performances in 2020 were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Disney Musicals in Schools program has been the most amazing journey for both the students and our teacher team at P.S. 53.,” said Kathy Keeley, director of theater arts at P.S. 53. “The students have learned so much about themselves as artists, and it’s truly been a rewarding experience watching their confidence grow over the course of the program.

“We’re so excited to have created a production to share with our school and our community.”

The cast has also been given the opportunity to participate in Disney Musicals in School’s “Student Share” where they will perform on a Broadway stage at the New Amsterdam Theatre on June 6.

“It’s the best thing I’ve ever experienced in school,” said third grade student, Janna Mostafa, who portrays Young Simba. “It feels great to be in this program. I love it a lot and I will sign up again next year.”

>> Tickets for the show are $10 each and can be purchased through the school by calling 718-987-8020.

“The Lion King has personally been an amazing experience,” said fifth-grader, Eli Shresta, who portrays Scar. “It has boosted my confidence, I got to express myself freely, and it was an excellent chance to make new friends.

“I’ve poured my heart and soul into this play, and it’s been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.”

DSNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS MINI RESIDENCY

The mission of Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS) Mini Residency is to help create sustainable theater programs in public schools. Theater programs foster love of performing, such as encouraging creativity and building self-confidence. Students grow throughout the process and are eager to share their talent with Staten Island.

This program has fostered team building, collaboration, trust, and empowerment,” said Beth Albano, Principal of P.S. 53. “These qualities guide our school’s mission and vision. The excitement and joy this residency brought not only to our performers, but to the entire student body is awesome and is what validates the strong school culture that we have.
