North Texas can’t seem to get enough of The Great Trailer Park Musical, a comedy about the marital woes of agoraphobic Jeannie Garstecki and her tollbooth-worker husband Norbert as they approach their 20th anniversary. Maybe it has something to do with the frequent serving of a repast alongside the hilarity.
In at least the fifth local production of the show since 2007, Lyric Stage is cooking up chili dogs, hamburgers and Frito pie and offering a beverage called Trash Can Punch in a souvenir cup.
When the musical was revived at Contemporary Theatre of Dallas in 2015, a drink called the Pink Flamingo was on the bar menu, reflecting an element of the set.
Three actors from previous productions — Andy Baldwin, Mary Gilbreath Grim and Cara Serber as a character named Linoleum — return in their original roles. Grim plays Jeannie, who’s been afraid to leave her and Norbert’s trailer since their baby was kidnapped years ago. Now he’s cheating on her with Pippi, the recently arrived stripper-on-the-run at Florida’s exclusive Armadillo Acres.
This go-round of The Great Trailer Park Musical, written by Betsy Kelso and David Nehls with a dose of adult language and sexual content, marks the first Lyric Stage show at its new Design District studio space.
