ST. PETERSBURG — Hunter Renfroe is known more for his bat than his glove, but the Rays outfielder made one of the most impressive defensive plays you’ll see in Friday’s 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays.
In the top of the ninth, Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero shot a line drive down the right field line that Renfroe chased down as it tailed away from him and made a snowcone catch at full speed.
As Renfroe crossed the foul line, he jumped over the three-foot fence out of the field of play and made a clean landing on an open area on the other side, his spikes landing on the concrete surface.
“I was more impressed by the leap than I was the catch,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “It looked like he was in the NFL combine. Very impressive.”
Listed at 6-foot-1, 230 pounds, Renfroe isn’t the most fleet of foot, but he covered a lot of ground on the play and took extra bases away from Guerrero, Jr. to open the inning.
And while Renfroe might not be known for his defense, he graded out as one of the top defensive outfielders in baseball last season. His 23 defensive runs saved, according to FanGraphs, ranked second among all outfielders, trailing only Victory Robles of the Nationals (25).
“Hunter’s played tremendous defense for us,” Cash said. “And we knew we acquired him, we were getting a player that could really help us on both sides of the ball. And even when you’re not you’re not seeing it at the plate or you’re scuffling, what he’s done defensively, so far this year has been really impressive.”
