Staff at Frere Hospital in East London have won over the hearts of the public after showing off some of their impressive dance moves during a surprise participation in the worldwide Jerusalema Dance Challenge phenomenon.
Millions of people across the world have been posting videos of themselves and their colleagues dancing to the rhythm of South African musician Master KG's hit song Jerusalema. The song has been topping the charts and the music video has been viewed more than 64 million times on YouTube.
The frontline workers of the East London hospital spread themselves out on the hospital grounds in their bright scrubs on Tuesday and showed their energetic dance moves on camera. A video of their performance is doing the rounds on social media and it is receiving rave reviews.
The public expressed their gratitude to the workers for finding the time to spread smiles, despite working in a depressing environment where they put their own lives at risk amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
When contacted for comment, the humble crew said they did not see a need for people to make a song and dance about their performance.
Dr CR Mason said the dance challenge was just a way of relieving stress.
"I commend the physios for organising such an activity and a way to relieve the stress levels. It is a pleasure to work with a caring team of health workers during this pandemic."
The group of 25 included physiotherapists, speech therapists, nurses, audiologists, doctors, dieticians and matrons.
The crew was challenged to do the performance by their sister government hospital, Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth.
Mason admitted that it was not easy to master the dance.
"We were all requested to repeat several times."
The hospital posted the video on Tuesday with the caption: "Even though we are in the middle of a pandemic, our energetic staff were out in the hospital grounds this morning in their bright scrubs doing the #JerusalemaDanceChallenge - what stars ??- so much love, rhythm and team work."
Gospel artist Butho Vuthela was one of the people who was dazzled by the performance. "I am impressed," Vuthela replied to the post on the hospital's Facebook page.
Another Facebook user Gina Pino said: "Thank you for putting your lives at risk and being on the frontline! Still find time to spread smile across many faces! True heroes. Stay safe."
Alice Kenworthy said: "I love the African rhythm!!! Thank you all for serving the community both medically and with joyful hope."
