In a year where we are looking for every reason to stay positive over the holiday, I suggest you take a road trip to the east side of the state to my home town, for what is known as the largest annual light display in Michigan. The Big Bright Light Show in Downtown Rochester is usually rung in every year with an event filled with locals, singing and coverage from multiple news sources, as the downtown buildings are illuminated with over 1 million points of light. Each building and business is strung up with their own section of colored lights, so businesses stand out.
There are over 4 blocks of street that are decorated from late November until early January along Main street or Rochester Road. From Kalamazoo, Rochester takes about 2 1/2 hours to get to, but once you arrive, you'll find everything you need. It's basically like Kalamazoo but bulked up. Rochester was the first settled city in Oakland county established in 1818. It became part of the Avon Township in 1835 and incorporated as an autonomous city in 1967.
I moved to Rochester Hills in 1989 and can say that it was a great place to grow up. We always made our own fun in the winter, but this light show is second to none. Check out the pictures below and you'll see just why you should take a road trip out there this year. The Big Bright Light Show runs 5 p.m. - Midnight until January 3rd, 2021:
