Cathedral of St. Paul will light up with dazzling display of ‘hope and unity’ - TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

Vacation souvenirs are as much a part of travel as a suitcase and passport, but St. Paul resident Elisabeth Holod went way beyond a handful of postcards or a hand-knit sweater on a 2018 trip to Oxford, England, to visit her son.

Holod brought back a memento of that trip large enough to cover the side of the Cathedral of St. Paul. She’s been the force behind “Cathedral Illuminated: The Manger,” a holiday event that starts Thursday and runs through Saturday and features projections on the side of the Cathedral along with music to tell the story of the birth of Jesus in a manger. The free event is limited to drive-by only because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The show’s message of hope and unity is particularly important in this pandemic year, Holod said. “What a message to have to end this crazy year.”

‘ENORMOUS SOUND AND LIGHT SHOW’

On that November trip two years ago, Holod and her husband went to Oxford’s Christmas Festival of Lights. An “enormous sound and light show” projected on the Museum of Natural History in Oxford so wowed Holod that she told her husband she had to find its source and turned around to wade through hundreds people. “My husband said, ‘That’s so like you,’ ” Holod said.

At the back of the crowd she found a tent and started asking who was in charge. “I am,” said a young man in a hoodie and jeans, according to Holod. He was Peter Walker, creator and sculptor behind the display that dazzled Holod, and head of the company Luxmuralis.

Even though Luxmuralis had never done a show in the United States, Holod envisioned it on the outside of the Cathedral — the highest point in St. Paul. And she began her campaign to convince Walker.

“With my travels, I’ve seen many sound and light shows,” Holod said. “This one just had a soul.”

Holod visited the artist in his home in Staffordshire, England, where Luxmuralis puts a show on the medieval Lichfield Cathedral. In fact, the 2020 show at Lichfield Cathedral will run at the same time as the show at the St. Paul cathedral. “This project is a bridge,” Holod said.

HOPE-FILLED MESSAGE

The people at Lichfield Cathedral were touched by news reports of the death of George Floyd and unrest in Minneapolis last spring, according to Holod. Walker concludes this year’s show — which no one has seen yet on either side of the Atlantic — with a show of respect for Black and brown mothers and their children that features a stained-glass Black Madonna and child from a church in North Carolina, Holod said.

“It will be shown at Lichfield concurrently,” Holod said. “Our experience is held in the hearts of people in Lichfield.”

It’s not a “Disney glam show,” Holod said. “It will use the Cathedral as a canvas for a hope-filled message.”

Pre-pandemic plans called for bleachers and pedestrian traffic to view the show, but it’s strictly a drive-by event. People will be able to pull over and park to watch the full 12-minute production, which features Walker’s images and an original score by David Harper that will be broadcast from Cathedral Hill Park on hyper-local radio frequency,

Holod credits the Cathedral Heritage Foundation for supporting and putting on the light show — as well as for the organization’s efforts to preserve the United States’ fifth-largest cathedral.

Though the event is free, donations to the Cathedral Heritage Foundation are accepted.
