Washington Football Team rookie defensive end Chase Young was having a terrific first half Sunday. And then it got better.
Young picked up a fumble and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown with 58 seconds left in the first half to give visiting Washington a 12-7 lead against the San Francisco 49ers. It's the first touchdown of his career and it continued a first half that was arguably his best of the season.
On the play, Young stunted to the middle from his left end position. When quarterback Nick Mullens stepped up to his right -- holding the ball loose -- defensive tackle Daron Payne reached out and stripped the ball. Young hustled over, picked it up and scored without needing to avoid any would-be tacklers.
In the first half, Young also had a sack and impacted other plays with his awareness and presence -- affecting a shovel pass, for example, by getting his hand in the throwing lane.

He also forced a fumble that led to a Washington field goal on the series before his touchdown.
That's what Washington envisioned when it drafted him second overall in April. He entered the game with 4.5 sacks, but his play against the run and his ability to affect plays with efforts that don't show up in the stat book has pleased the coaches.
It wasn't just Young who scored a touchdown on defense. Another rookie -- seventh-round safety Kam Curl -- did the same thing in the third quarter.

With pressure from Washington's five-man defensive front, Mullens started to move to his right. He saw fullback Kyle Juszczyk in the flat.
But Juszczyk turned upfield and Mullens threw to where he had been; that left Curl, a strong safety, the lone player in the area. Curl made the easy interception and returned it 76 yards for his first NFL touchdown.
