Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard and supermodel Kate Moss collaborated in designing two of these high-jewelry offerings; Harry Winston unveils pendants inspired by kaleidoscopes; and Sotheby's auctions a set of five necklaces for charity.
This fall has seen the release of four stand-out new high-jewelry collections. Two count celebrities — Marion Cotillard and Kate Moss — as collaborating designers; one is inspired by the cascading refracted lights of a kaleidoscope; and a fourth benefits charities including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
Winston Kaleidoscope
Back in the 1990s, Harry Winston created a delightful objet d’art called the Ultimate Kaleidoscope. The limited-edition jeweled piece was inspired by the mesmerizing children’s toys and the way they refract light, not unlike the way that diamonds gleam from their many facets. Now the company — whose designed were worn by Regina King, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Kaitlyn Dever at 2020 Oscars — has created an entire new collection called Kaleidoscope that draws from those archival pieces.
Encompassing 32 high-jewelry pendants, as well as 11 watches, the new pieces play up the hypnotizing multi-hued feel of the original works. Gemstones that include red rubellites, green tsavorites, purple sapphires, aquamarine, turquoise and tanzanite — along with diamonds — are combined in exquisite patterns, with all set in a way that there are no gaps, using the smallest possible amount of metal, to push the sparkle effect to the highest possible level. The pendants, which come in small, medium and large sizes, hang on 30-inch chains set with matching gemstones. Prices upon request, at Harry Winston boutiques and harrywinston.com.
Chopard Ice Cube Capsule by Marion Cotillard
Marion Cotillard and Chopard have enjoyed a connection for years, with the actress wearing jewelry by the house when she won her Best Actress Oscar for La Vie En Rose in 2008. Cotillard also was the first actress to walk a red carpet in pieces from Chopard’s Green Carpet Collection (in 2013 at Cannes), which is made using Fairmined-certified gold as well as diamonds sourced from supplier members of the Responsible Jewellery Council.
This fall, Cotillard and her stylist Eliott Bliss designed a collection, Ice Cube Capsule by Marion Cotillard — launched with Chopard and its artistic director Caroline Scheufele — that hews to these same responsibly mined standards. The collection includes seven high-jewelry diamond and 18k Fairmined gold pieces with a bold, contemporary aesthetic, one ring (composed of two bands connected by a 5.73-carat princess-cut solitaire) and six earrings (all designed as clips). "Chopard has accompanied me since my debut as an actress and I share Caroline Scheufele’s commitment to ethics, so this new collaboration is a great way to further strengthen the ties between us," said Cotillard in a statement. Prices upon request, at chopard.com.
De Beers Group's ReSet Collective
With a commitment to responsibly mined minerals, the De Beers Group has unveiled its new ReSet Collective, a special initiative in which it’s worked with five female jewelry designers, Jade Trau, Jennie Kwon, Julez Bryant, Sara Weinstock and ZoĆ« Chicco. Each has created a one-of-a-kind high-jewelry pendant incorporating naturally sourced diamonds, after traveling last year to Botswana to see the De Beers Group’s operations first-hand as well as the community and conservation programs it supports.
The pendants — most incorporate raw diamonds and depictions of animals such as elephants and big cats — make for a splurge for great causes. They are currently being auctioned by Sotheby’s (sale ends Dec. 17) with estimates that range from around $21,000 to $39,000 per piece, and 100 percent of the proceeds go to charity, split equally between Botswana’s Stepping Stones International, a youth-empowerment organization, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Info at sothebys.com.
Messika by Kate Moss
Kate Moss’s journey to collaborating with Messika began when the supermodel starred last year in advertisements for the French luxury brand. She then got to know designer Valérie Messika, and one time when the two met up for tea in London, Moss decided to bring along her own jewelry box to the meeting, revealing some of her personal collection that includes Art Deco, Victorian and 70s pieces.
Together, the two decided to work together on a wide-ranging high-jewelry collection comprising 11 sets (with names like Released Sun, Spirited Wind and Exotic Charm) and 70 pieces, many with Deco inspirations. Items include tassel necklaces, ankle and head pieces, three-finger rings, and oversized hoops, most with diamonds, some with mother-of-pearl, turquoise or gleaming green malachite. $3,000 to $250,000, at messika.com.
