This Fall, when iOS 15 goes on general release, AirPods Pro will snag a bunch of very cool updates. But while there are public beta programs for users of iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac and Apple Watch, AirPods Pro users needed to be patient.
Even developers couldn’t update their AirPods Pro.
That’s changed with the addition of AirPods Pro firmware to a section called More Downloads in the Apple Developer Program. There’s no public beta, at least not yet, and I suspect there won’t be. That means that unless you’re a developer, it’s best to wait until the Fall.
Which is tantalizing, but there we are.
And what’s available to developers isn’t the full version, though that will doubtless come later. For instance, it doesn’t include the brilliant Conversation Boost, which will allow you to use your AirPods like subtle, cool-looking hearing boosters so that conversations in noisy restaurants, for instance, no longer need defeat you.
Mind you, where public betas are exceptionally easy to download, as are the other dev betas, this one is much more of a chore.
Developers need an iPhone running iOS 15 beta and to have fully charged their AirPods Pro. Well, that’s not too challenging, but the process also requires a Mac running Xcode 13 beta software.
Not only is an AirPods Pro configuration profile required, but also the AirPods Pro must be connected to the iPhone and the iPhone to the Mac.
That’s not all: iPhone Pre-release beta firmware settings must be turned on, AirPods Pro automatic beta software updates need to be on also, and receiving and installing the updates can take up to 24 hours.
Oh, and once you’ve got the new firmware on your AirPods Pro, you can go back to an earlier release.
Which makes me think I’m happy to wait. Life’s complicated enough already without all this. I can manage in noisy restaurants for a few more months.
