After riding his first winner in the last race at Bellewstown at the beginning of July, Meath apprentice Robert Whearty was on the mark again today in the last race at Galway.
That first winner was achieved at his local track for trainer David Dunne who is based near Curraha and it was his boss and Danestown-based Gavin Cromwell who provided the ammunition today with 25/1 outsider Dazzling Darren.
Dazzling Darren won three times on the all-weather in England for Cromwell and owner Darren Cahill in 2020 and last May won at Sligo.
Today, also in the west of Ireland, Dazzling Darren benefited from Robert Whearty's 10lb claim and the duo edged out the Noel Meade-trained Crassus and Dylan Browne-McMonagle.
“That was great. It was very difficult from that draw and in fairness he got out well and went forward. It worked out great,” said trainer Gavin Cromwell to irishracing.com.
“Robert is a good young lad and his 10lb is valuable in these types of handicaps," he added.
Whearty lives in Bellewstown and only got his licence at the beginning of June.
Work is only a few miles away at Gavin Cromwell's base near Balrath and the talented young apprentice gained a lot of experience on the pony-racing circuit.
Now, with two winners to his credit, he needs another one to get his claim reduced to seven.
Based on the evidence of his display at Galway today it's likely that winner number three is not too far away.
There was also success for Moynalty jockey Declan McDonogh who partnered the Joseph O'Brien-trained Buckaroo to an impressive win in the opener.
Champion jockey Colin Keane was also on the mark when he steered the Dermot Weld-trained Sherkin Island to victory in the extended mile maiden.
