Apple Watch May Introduce Dazzling New Features, But There’s A Catch - Forbes

The next Apple Watch, doubtless called Apple Watch Series 7, will likely be announced soon—read why I think Tuesday, September 14 is the favored date here—alongside the iPhone 13 (here’s all we know about that) and AirPods 3.

But a recent, extensive report claimed that production difficulties may mean a delay or constrained supply. The same report also said that there would be exciting new health features included in this year’s Watch, something other pundits have flatly contradicted.

So, a new in-depth analysis by The Wall Street Journal into where the Watch is heading provides an intriguing picture. The catch is that the things predicted are for future Apple Watches, not this year’s model.

I’m sorry to break that to you because what’s promised is pretty cool. Here’s what’s coming, we think.

Blood pressure monitoring

If that sounds familiar, it’s because it was what Nikkei Asia claimed was coming to Series 7, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, when asked about it on Twitter replied: “Not a chance”. Ah, well.

But it looks like he must have meant that model alone, as the new report claims Apple’s working on it and it will come later. Samsung already has this capability on its recent smartwatches, though it’s not available in every territory yet. Right now, Korea and some European countries have this feature.

It’s very useful, though not quite seamless as it requires you calibrate the watch by taking three measurements alongside a conventional blood pressure cuff, once a month.

Apple is planning to record blood pressure by measuring the speed of the wave a heart beat sends through someone’s arteries, the report claims, using the Watch’s sensors. Apple would aim to show blood pressure trends, it seems, but may not provide baseline measures of systolic and diastolic blood pressure—something which Samsung’s system does provide.

Sleep apnea

More advanced sleep tracking is promised for Apple Watch Series 7 with calculation of respiratory rate during slumbers. However, it seems more features are likely to be added on top of that in the future. These center around using the blood oxygen sensor introduced in the Apple Watch Series 6, or a version of it, to detect sleep apnea.

One issue that’s being worked on is that taking readings during the night could flatten the battery, apparently.

Wrist thermometer

Temperature changes are an important part of our health, and if the Apple Watch can take your temperature then it could detect a fever or be used for fertility planning, giving clues to women as to what stage they are in their ovulation cycle. This could arrive in 2022, it seems.

There have been other reports about a thermometer in the Apple Watch, including to contribute to mental health, as stress levels can have an effect on body temperature, for instance.

Diabetes detection

It seems this is under consideration, too, though is apparently in very early stages. A non-invasive way to measure blood glucose levels is very difficult to achieve, as Apple execs have told me in the past, so expect such a sensor to be some way off. However, it’s believed that Apple is working with a British start-up, Rockley Photonics, to develop suitable sensors: full details of that here.

FDA updates

It’s also said that Apple is trying to get the FDA to sign off on updates to some current features. For instance, users with atrial fibrillation could track that condition if the feature was updated, instead of it being restricted to those who say they don’t have AFib. Similarly, the Watch could alert people if blood-oxygen levels drop, something the current Watch doesn’t do, merely providing a reading when the user seeks one.

So, what about Apple Watch Series 7?

The report gives a very little bit of hope for new features. It says “most of its more ambitious health-related improvements aren’t expected before 2022. Most is the key word here and leaves just a little wiggle room where some health upgrades could arrive in the coming weeks.
