On a bustling 5th avenue street corner, Kevan Hall’s NYFW SS22 show unfolded to a room packed with eager fashion lovers. From bright colors, classic silhouettes, and floral patterns that evoke everything we love about spring, Hall’s design collection “Brushstrokes” is meant to bring to mind 1930s Parisian multi-culture.
Kevan Hall, a Detroit-based designer known for couture red carpet looks and his namesake label Kevan Hall Collection, made his return to New York Fashion Week after two decades off the city’s semi-annual runways. For him, “redefining glamour for a new generation is an interpretive art” – he’s renowned for redesigning mid-century brand Halston, and dressing the likes of Celine Dion, Sharon Stone, Charlize Theron, and Salma Hayek in his sleek evening wear. In the two decades he’s been away from NYFW, Hall has focused on international pursuits and is one of the founders of the design scholarship non-profit, Black Design Collective.
This show is inspired by the influences of painter Christian Bérard (seen through the “brushstroke”-like patterns on some of the clothing), sculptor Alberto Giacometti, and interior designer Jean Michel-Frank. The period in which these artists created is “legendary” because it “birthed a new intersection for fashion, theatre, and interior design.” By combining these art forms, Hall turns his runway show into a beautiful mélange of mediums represented through clothing. From hand painted jacquards, mirrored pockets, and architecture-inspired silhouettes, all against a colorful backdrop of coral, alabaster, lavender, celadon, and fucshia, Kevin Hall’s spring collection captured the hearts of New York Fashion Week-goers on Sunday. Each of the 29 looks celebrated creativity and design in a stunning way, each detail coming to life under the lights of the runway.
