Taking center stage with Aaron Amhof | News, Sports, Jobs - Fort Dodge Messenger

Aaron Amhof learns a lot about himself by not being himself.

The Fort Dodge senior, who just performed in FDSH’s fall play “Radium Girls” as Arthur Roeder, enjoys getting out of his element while on stage.

“There are many different things I love about performing and one of them is what I learn about myself through the process,” Amhof said. “Singing, playing trumpet or portraying a character makes me feel a variety of emotions that sometimes I may struggle to express.

“Each song or character teaches me something valuable that I carry with me each day.”

Enjoying the stage since he was 6 or 7 years old was natural for Amhoff, as it is a family tradition.

“My family got me into performing,” Amhof said. “As an Amhof, it is a rich tradition to perform and I have grown to love it with all my heart.

“I remember singing with my family at church and my first show was ‘Babes in Toyland’ around the same age.”

While on stage, there is a rush that is just unmatched for the Dodger.

“Nothing can compare to performing,” Amhof said. “When I perform I feel as though I’m in a special atmosphere. Adrenaline rushes through my body and the way I feel is unlike anything else. It is my chance to let go of every worry on my mind and portray many different emotions that will help me learn more about myself.

“Being able to do all of this with my friends makes it even better. We share the love of performing and that has brought me memories I’ll never forget.”

Through his four years at FDSH, Amhof has taken part in choir, band, jazz band, speech, performers club, fall play, spring musical, Dodger Senate, ambassadors, choral society, Fort Dodge Area Symphony, Brady O’Brien Live, worship team, National Honor Society, All-State chorus, vocal and trumpet lessons.

“Sometimes it may be overwhelming (doing so much),” Amhof said. “But I’ve somehow managed to continue with everything. The key to making it work is communication because if I don’t then there may be a problem.

“It is important for me to be involved so I stay busy and I can give back to the community. I have been blessed growing up and I like to take every opportunity I can to give back.”

But sharing his love for the arts has been a big part of what Amhof portrays.

“The best part about performing to me is getting to share what I love so much with others and hopefully leave a positive impression on their lives,” Amhof said. “I remember when I was little going to each FDSH choir concert and musical leaving thinking that it was the greatest thing I’d ever experienced.

“Now I hope to give back and try to change someone’s life for the better like mine was.”

There have been some memorable accomplishments and performances that stand out for Amhof.

“In a tight race with performing in the All-State festival, receiving an outstanding performance in a principal role in ‘Footloose’ as Chuck Cranston is one of my favorite memories,” Amhof said. “I didn’t believe my role was large enough to be considered for that, but when Mrs. Krug announced my name — that was my favorite moment.”

Through the influences of his family, Mr. (Matt) Drees, Mrs. (Lindey) Krug, Mr. (Al) Paulson, Bruce Perry, Malaney Butrick, Brayden Schmieder and Mikeal Campbell, Amhof has enjoyed his time as a Dodger.

After high school Amhof plans on majoring in vocal performance, and possibly musical theater or music education.
