Race preview

The Tour de France heads toward the midpoint with a trio of tricky stages that will test all types of riders in the race.

On Saturday's stage 8 to Limoges, the 201-kilometre stage from Libourne could be decided in several different ways. Mark Cavendish (Astana), having come close on stage 7 only to have his gears slip as he rocketed out of the bunch, will want revenge and the outright stage win record.

However, a pair of category 4 climbs inside the final 20km could complicate those aims. The climbs aren't particularly long or steep but favour more the stars of the Classics like Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), who has yet to win a stage, or Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who will likely be relieved of lead-out duties for Jasper Philipsen, the winner of three stages. Or, perhaps Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) who has so far flown under the radar.

It could also be a day the breakaway sticks, or perhaps a late move that goes on the category 3 climb with 70km remaining. You'll have to watch the Tour de France to find out!

Stage 9 on Sunday will be a prime-time bout between overall leader Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and his closest competitor, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) as they face the daunting Puy de Dôme, with punishing double-digit gradients in the final 4km.

The riders will enjoy a rest day on Monday before another transitional day on stage 10 from Vulcania to Issoire - a day riddled with smaller mountains and likely a fight for the polka dot jersey, currently held by Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost).

The spotlight shifts to the sprinters on stage 7 to Bordeaux. See the entire 2023 Tour de France route for what's coming next and see if you agree with our list of the best sprinters of all time.
