Newcastle United have moved quickly to add the transfer recruits Eddie Howe was desperately seeking, following up the arrival of Sandro Tonali by pursuing Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento.
The Leicester forward and Southampton defender are both close to joining Newcastle and could feature for the Magpies in the pre-season tour of the USA should their respective deals be completed in the coming days. Barnes completed his medical on Thursday, while Southampton have accepted an offer for Livramento, who is happy to join Howe's side.
But Newcastle continue to grapple with Financial Fair Play and still have a number of players to get off the books. Allan Saint-Maximin will join Saudi Arabia side Al Ahli in the coming days but the next stage of the window for Howe and his team requires them to offload more fringe players who remain tied to hefty Mike Ashley-era contracts.

Karl Darlow is one star close to departing this summer, with Bournemouth holding talks over the backup stopper. The Newcastle goalkeeper will be given the chance to fly back from America to join the Cherries once a fee is agreed.
Kell Watts was involved in first-team training earlier this month but hasn't featured for Newcastle in friendly clashes with Gateshead and Rangers. Wigan are extremely interested in re-signing the centre-back on loan this summer.
Three men who have already been told they have no future on Tyneside are Isaac Hayden, Ryan Fraser and Jeff Hendrick. Offloading the out of favour trio is high on the priority list as Newcastle navigate the next stage of the window, where Howe will look to fine tune his 25-man squad.
Fraser was initially involved in the Livramento negotiations and almost joined Southampton in January. Hayden and Hendrick both spent last season in the Championship but Norwich City and Reading respectively haven't pursued a permanent deal.
There is still scope for Newcastle to strengthen in a number of other positions in the coming weeks but getting fringe players, on high wages, off the books will be key to doing just that.
