ALBANY — Spectacular peak fall foliage will make its first appearances in the Adirondacks, the Catskills and the Thousand Islands-St. Lawrence Seaway region — with the Central New York region not far behind — according to volunteer observers for the state tourism department’s “I LOVE NY” program.
This season’s rapid changing of the leaves follows days and nights of cooler weather, according to the observers, who add conditions are nearly perfect for enthusiasts to enjoy.
From Saranac Lake to Lake Placid, spotters predict 80-85% color change with peak to some just-past-peak conditions. Leaf peepers will find a “lush kaleidoscope of dandelion. goldenrod, ginger, russet, orange crush, scarlet, raspberry, claret, and merlot leaves of above-average brilliance....with no frosty nights and pleasant temperatures — and barring damaging rain — the foliage in the area will continue to be breathtaking through the weekend.”
From Boonville to Old Forge, visitors along the Route 28 corridor as well as the area’s peaks and hiking trails, will be treated to brilliant colors this weekend, with conditions at or near peak, according to the report.
Spotters reporting from Old Forge expect more than 85% color change with hues ranging from bright oranges and reds with many splashes of brilliant yellow. Strong golds and burgundy are holding steady, the reporters add.
In Central New York, the weather has also led to a rapid color change from just a week ago. Spotters from Cooperstown to Oneonta, predict as much as 55% change for this weekend, with bright shades of red, yellow, and orange.
In Oneida County, volunteers are reporting 40% to 50% change in the Rome-Utica area, with beautiful mixtures of orange, red, gold amid the green leaves creating picturesque hillside and valley vistas.
Madison County spotters from Stone Quarry Hill Art Park near Cazenovia predict up to 40% leaf change with beautiful, very brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow.
The I LOVE NY Fall Foliage Report for New York State is comprised of reports from volunteer field observers and reflect expected color conditions for the coming weekend.
