The trials and tribulations of a talk show host’s family. A date between two extreme opposites that gets dangerous. These are the themes of the two winning entries in Dominion Stage’s first playwriting contest.

“We were very surprised at the volume of responses we received, especially considering this is our very first playwriting competition and that other local companies are doing similar contests,” says the competition co-chair Carol Jean Clark. “We had a lot of trouble narrowing down our winners. There were so many amazing entries!”

Dominion Stage’s competition had two categories: full-length plays that were no longer than two hours in length, and one-act plays that were 60 minutes or longer. All entries had to be original unpublished works and could be in any genre except musicals. The prize for the winning submissions is to have the plays produced by Dominion Stage as live online staged readings.

“Dominion Stage loves musicals, and we’ve produced at least one musical, if not more, every year of our 70 years of existence,” says competition co-chair Rebecca Harris. “However, it’s a bit daunting at this time. Once we’re past COVID restrictions we plan to revisit this wonderful idea.”

Here are the winners of the Dominion Stage’s first playwriting competition:

Full-Length Plays

WINNER: Dead Air by Greg Jones Ellis
A family is torn apart when a talk show host uses her “genius son” to engage viewers/listeners despite his objections.

HONORABLE MENTION: Man on the Street by Marilyn Bennett
A man who was stabbed while stopping a mugging touches the lives of two women from very different walks of life.

One-Act Plays

WINNER: Tempting the Hand of Fate by Chuck Smith
A cat-and-mouse game begins when a serial killer dates an ex-homicide detective—but who is the cat, and who is the mouse?

HONORABLE MENTION: Radiator by Graig Houk
Attraction brings two neighbors together as they bond over their different lives and their building’s broken radiator.

HONORABLE MENTION: The Wish by Crystal Adaway
Two daughters bring their mother to a cabin for her birthday. One of them brings an unexpected “guest” as a gift.

In the coming weeks, Dominion Stage will announce auditions for the staged readings of the two winning plays, which the company plans to stage online this fall.
