Skye shines as she comes up with a dazzling idea to cheer up Netherton care home residents - Daily Record

All that glitters may not be gold but schoolgirl Skye Ralton came up with a precious idea worth its weight in the stuff.

The 12-year-old paid for more than 50 chip shop suppers for the residents and staff at Netherton Court Care Home in Wishaw.

Kind-hearted Skye, a former pupil at nearby Netherton Primary, has spent the last few weeks making and selling sparking glasses decorated with glitter to raise the money for the meals as well as other goodies such as chocolate and drinks.

Skye, who is now a Taylor High pupil, has been busy making the glasses at the family home near Motherwell.

She said: “I’ve been making them for three or four weeks in different colours.

“I just wanted to do something to help. The teachers at my old school have been brilliant. Mrs Kesley, the deputy head, bought loads of them.”

Skye’s mum, 34-year-old student nurse Michelle Ralton and partner John McKee delivered the feast to the grateful care home residents and staff.

The idea for the glasses came about when Michelle was out a walk with Skye and the couple’s other children; Dean, 10, and Ellis, nine.

“After lockdown started the kids were struggling a bit,” Michelle admitted.

“Skye had seen an article on the news on the care homes and the impact on them and began to get upset.

“We were out walking and were talking to them about it just to get an idea of where their wee heads were at.

“A lot of the stuff they were coming out with was quite negative so John and I mentioned Captain Tom Moore and that he was doing a good thing.

“By the time we got home we decided there must be something positive that could be done.

“Skye had been given glitter and stuff by her auntie for her birthday and decided she wanted to make glitter glasses.

“She was just selling them to family to start with on Facebook but she was getting orders in, and her teachers at Netherton Primary have been absolutely outstanding in supporting her.

“People were sharing the post and she’s just totally smashed her target.

“It’s 52 meals, 40-odd residents, but she wanted to include the staff as well.

“We teach the children that if you do things for charity it’s not for the recognition, but we are so proud of her.”

John’s cousin Duncan McKee owns Streetfood’s Traditional Chip Shop in Coatbridge and agreed to open the shop solely to cater for Skye’s care home order.

“They made up half fish suppers and half sausage suppers and some fritters and stuff as well,” Michelle added.

“The care home were delighted and it’s good the staff are getting some recognition for the work they are doing.”

Michelle called the care home ahead of their trip to drop-off the food at the door to ensure the residents remain as protected as possible.

Melanie McGhee manager at Netherton Court said: “It’s so lovely and so kind-hearted that Skye thought of the care home staff as well.

“Everyone has been fine in here so far – touch wood. We’re just doing our best to keep everyone’s spirits up, so it’s such a nice gesture.

“It’s difficult for children through this as well, as they can’t spend time with their friends just now. It’s just lovely that she thought of us.”
