Giro d’Italia stage 1: Stunningly fast Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) took 10 seconds out of the second placed rider, Edoardo Affini (Jumbo-Visma) to win stage 1 and take the first pink jersey of the 2021 Giro d’Italia in Torino. 58.7 kilometres per hour for 8.6 kilometres!

Seven months ago, Filippo Ganna won all the time trials in the 2020 Giro d’Italia and he has continued that today. The World champion was clearly the strongest through Turin against the clock. Remco Evenepoel finished seventh on his racing return and first Grand Tour.
Stage 1 course: A Short ITT on urban roads around the Po river. Starting from Piazza Castello, the route runs alongside the Po all the way to and across the Parco del Valentino on undulating roads (with an intermediate time recording at the Borgo Medievale), crosses the river and homes in on Corso Moncalieri. Straight after leaving Parco del Valentino, the route passes through a short and well-lit tunnel. The final kilometres run flat all the way to the finish line, which sits on a tarmac road.

Turin was the venue for the first stage of the 104th Giro d’Italia, an 8.6-kilometre individual time trial on flat roads. Filippo Tagliani from Gianni Savio’s Androni team was the first rider off in the first Grand Tour of the season. Dekker was the first to set a time with 9:19, after overtaking Tagliani who had started a minute earlier. The time of the 23-year-old neopro, son of former professional cyclist Erik Dekker, was leader until Campenaerts came in. The Belgian had warmed up live on Zwift before the start. The two-time European champion would not lead for long either, because Roger Kluge posted a new fastest time, after which Jonathan Castroviejo went even faster. The Spaniard stopped the clock at 9:14.

Dylan Groenewegen started as the 25th rider. For the sprinter it was his first appearance in a race since the Tour of Poland last year. With a time of 10 minutes he rode a reasonable time. For Luis León Sánchez it was a day to quickly forget; the Spaniard had to switch to his road bike. Nelson Oliveira and Pello Bilbao, were also short for Castroviejo’s top time.

Mathias Brändle was next to bring the fastest time closer to nine minutes. The Austrian clocked 9:09, pushing Castroviejo out of the hot seat. Vincenzo Nibali, who was a bit of a surprise starter in the Giro after a wrist injury, did set a fair time, Aleksandr Vlasov and Gianni Moscon were also average. Tobias Foss set the first serious target time. The Norwegian from Jumbo-Visma finished in 9 minutes exactly, which was too fast for Rémi Cavagna, a big contender for many.

At that point, a whole series of riders still had to finish, including Foss’s teammate Edoardo Affini. The Italian was flying and was the first to go under 9 minutes with 8:57. Dutch champion Jos van Emden clocked the third fastest time and crossed the finish line in 9:05, after passing Jefferson Cepeda. João Almeida rolled off the starting podium, followed by other favourites such as Egan Bernal, Simon Yates and Daniel Martin.

Almeida, who wore pink in the Giro for fifteen days last year, was slower than Affini with 9:04, but was slightly faster than his teammate Cavagna. Bernal then put 9:26 on the board and Yates 9:25. With that, the Briton did as well as fellow countryman Hugh Carthy, who had finished a little earlier. Vlasov and especially Almeida did the best of the GC favourites, while Yates, Bernal, Carthy and Bilbao were close together. Daniel Martin clocked 9:44 and lost time.

Jai Hindley, last year’s second placed, also lost some time. The Australian finished in 9:33. After that, all eyes were on the starting podium, where Remco Evenepoel started his time trial. 266 days after his crash in Lombardia, the Belgian returned to racing, to start the first Grand Tour of his career. At the first intermediate point he clocked a promising fourth fastest time, on the line he set a good 9:06, only slightly slower than his teammates Almeida and Cavagna.

At that time, Filippo Ganna was already working on a fast time. In the rainbow jersey, INEOS Grenadiers’ Italian sped to 8:47, good for an average speed of 58.748 kilometres per hour. From the hot seat, Affini had to take off his hat to his fellow countryman. There was a handful of riders still to finish, but men like Michael Hepburn, Patrick Bevin, Mikel Landa, Romain Bardet and Dries De Bondt were no threat to the stage victory. Ganna won the first stage and pink jersey of 2021.
