The return of Margaret Seikel.
TUESDAY PUZZLE — When we first met Margaret Seikel, she was a fourth-year college student making her New York Times debut. She may or may not have graduated by now — Ms. Seikel is enrolled in a dual degree program — but she is back with a delicious puzzle for us.
And when I say “delicious,” I mean this one has sizzle. As always, that is hopefully a hint but not a spoiler.
Tricky Clues
32A. The nonprofit, educational website Khan Academy was started in 2006 by Salman “SAL” Khan as a way to provide free educational tools to anyone who needed them.
34A. The LISA FRANK line of trippy rainbow designs was very popular when my kids were in school. They started out making school supplies and stickers, but have branched out into clothing as well.
46A. This one made me laugh, because I couldn’t stop picturing SANTA as a “Seasonal delivery driver?” for Amazon.
48A. “On the DL” is short for “on the down low,” or “secretively.” To “Loop in on the DL” is to BCC someone in an email.
6D. “E.g.” clues are asking solvers for a category the item in the clue might fall into. In this clue, “Doctors Without Borders, e.g.” is a nongovernmental organization, or NGO.
8D. Yelp is a review website that began as a way for people to rate their dining experiences at restaurants, but has since expanded to reviews of many types of businesses. It was popular enough to become an eponym for any review of a restaurant.
29D. A double indicator clue! “M.L.K. Day, e.g.: Abbr.” is looking for a shortened (“Abbr.”) reference to a category (“e.g.”) that M.L.K. Day might fall into. The holiday is always observed on a Monday (the category), and the abbreviation would be MON.
32D. Radiators make a SSS sound. Mine also make loud “thwack” and “clang” noises. I should probably look into that.
45D. Pardon me while I stifle my gag reflex, but the answer to “Cough it up!,” which is a brilliant clue, is PHLEGM.
53D. I was going to say “Oompa Loompas,” but in this puzzle, the “Fixtures in a chocolate factory” are VATS.
Today’s Theme
Are you hungry? I’m hungry. Let’s dig around the Wordplay fridge and see what we can cook up.
Who wants breakfast for dinner? That’s always good, and Ms. Seikel is supplying the breakfast meat. She has stashed a SAUSAGE LINK at 55A. The ends of the four theme entries are synonyms for SAUSAGE.
I’m going to spill the beans here — which happen to go really well with SAUSAGE, if you’re having a full English breakfast — so if you would like a bit of help spotting the synonyms, click on any of the entries below.
18A. Rotten kid
SPOILED BRAT
23A. Heavy metal fan
HEAD BANGER
34A. Brand of school supplies known for its dazzling rainbow designs
LISA FRANK
49A. Certain emotional support animal
THERAPY DOG
Constructor Notes
I am humbled and thrilled to have a second puzzle in The Times. I started working on this theme during a lecture on constitutional history in February 2020. As we discussed the Warren Court, I jotted down “FELIX FRANKFURTER (16)” in my notebook margins. I was later pleasantly surprised to see how many nicknames there are for sausage.
Associate Justice Frankfurter did not make it into my final submission, as I chose 34-Across as the central themer instead. I know this entry may be unfamiliar to some, but I am delighted to debut a truly “colorful” answer from my childhood.
I hope the puzzle brightens your day!
