Giro d’Italia stage 10: Today was a sprinter’s day, but as usual in the Giro d’Italia it wasn’t as simple as that. First there were some climbs to get over then there was the chaotic sprint with the regulation twists and turns (and crash) before the finish line. After a perfect lead-out from his BORA-hansgrohe team, Peter Sagan took the win ahead of Fernando Gaviria of UAE Team Emirates. Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers) held the overall lead going into the first rest day.
Stage win and points lead for Peter Sagan
The tenth stage of the Giro d’Italia 2021 was won by Peter Sagan. The Slovak of BORA-hansgrohe was the fastest rider of the peloton in the streets of Foligno after a stage of 139 kilometres, in which Dylan Groenewegen and Tim Merlier were dropped halfway through the stage. Sagan beat Fernando Gaviria and Davide Cimolai. The pink jersey remains with Egan Bernal, although Remco Evenepoel came a second closer.

Giro stage 10 route: A short, rolling stage with a pan-flat finale. The route first takes in climbs up to Sella di Corno and Forca di Arrone, and then tackles one last ascent up to Valico della Somma (with KOM points). The route eventually levels out in the final part, running on broad and mostly straight roads. As the stage passes through several urban areas, roundabouts, traffic islands and street furniture will be found along the route. The final kilometres are quite straight, up to 2,000m to the finish. Here the route features a right-hand bend, immediately followed by two left hand bends that lead to the home stretch (at 1,300m out), with just a slight half-turn 500m before the finish line, on tarmac road.
Only five Bahrain Victorious team riders left on the Giro
A leading group of five escaped from the gun: Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarche-Wanty Gobert), Kobe Goossens (Lotto Soudal), Simon Pellaud (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec), Umberto Marengo (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè) and Samuele Rivi (eolo-Kometa), Due to the presence of Van der Hoorn the peloton wasn’t too keen on giving them a big lead. Jumbo-Visma was the first team to chase and kept the leading group around 1:30 to 2 minutes.

Jumbo-Visma controlled the break together with Cofidis, Alpecin-Fenix, Qhubeka Assos and UAE Team Emirates. The sprinters, Dylan Groenewegen, Elia Viviani, Tim Merlier, Giacomo Nizzolo and Fernando Gaviria all put their men to work. The difference fluctuated between 2 and 3 minutes for a while.

At the first intermediate sprint of the day, there was some activity at the front between Pellaud and Marengo, who lead in the special intermediate sprint classification. In the peloton, Viviani, Pasqualon and Sagan picked up some more points in the battle for the ciclamino jersey. The leading group was delayed a bit later due to a closed railway crossing, but that didn’t cause many problems. The peloton didn’t have the same problem.
The break had hard time to stay away
60 kilometres from the finish, in the hills halfway through the stage, BORA-hansgrohe put the peloton under pressure for the first time. The team hoped to drop the pure sprinters to increase the chances for Peter Sagan. The breakaway group was caught at 43 kilometres out from the finish as Dylan Groenewegen lost contact on the first climb.
The peloton was not on a day off
For Tim Merlier it was too fast on the second climb, the Cat 4 Valico della Somma. Just before the summit, David Dekker and Giacomo Nizzolo also dropped off. From the top there were 38.5 kilometres to go to the finish. The sprinters who did survive the climb were Sagan, Viviani, Gaviria and Davide Cimolai.

There was then a long descent, followed by a flat final towards Foligno. Israel Start-Up Nation also put a man on the front, because Cimolai had survived the climb. Nizzolo followed at half a minute with only Victor Campenaerts still in support. The European champion had to do a lot of work himself, but the peloton was far too fast and so Nizzolo and Campenaerts gave up the fight 25 kilometres from the finish. The groups of Merlier and Groenewegen were even further behind by that time.
INEOS Grenadiers were looking after Bernal, can they do that for the next two weeks?
With 18 kilometres to go to the finish, there was an intermediate sprint with bonuses of 3, 2 and 1 seconds. Rémi Cavagna hit the front for Remco Evenepoel and Filippo Ganna for Egan Bernal. In the end, Jhonatan Narvaez snatched the three seconds ahead of Evenepoel, who was second. Pink jersey Bernal was third and saw his Belgian competitor snatch 1 second on the overall standings.
With 88km to go… All stop for a train
Order was restored and BORA-hansgrohe took over again, but the nervousness remained due to the strong wind. Various trains started their work, on one hand for the sprinter, on the other to keep the GC riders out of trouble. Jos van Emden tried to surprise the peloton, but that attempt failed.
Spring is here
BORA-hansgrohe had the best lead-out in the twisty finalé for Sagan, while Alpecin-Fenix and UAE Team Emirates were also among the action. Due to a crash by Max Kanter, there was a split at the front, but that didn’t cause Sagan any problems. The Slovak reacted to an acceleration of Juan Sebastián Molano on the last corner and managed to keep Gaviria behind him in the finishing straight. Cimolai was third, ahead of Stefano Oldani, Gianni Vermeersch and Dries De Bondt.
The Maglia Ciclamino, Tim Merlier was not on a good day
Due to his stage victory, Sagan is 50 points better off in the points classification and the new wearer of the ciclamino jersey.
The peloton were not waiting for anyone
Tuesday is the first rest day and the entire race is subjected to a PCR corona tests today and tomorrow. The results will be announced on Wednesday before the start of stage 11.

Not all of them were dropped so I still had to beat top sprinters like Gaviria and Viviani. In the end I won and I’m very happy about that. I also needed some luck that I didn’t get in previous sprint stages.”

Maglia Rosa Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers): “I didn’t plan to go for the intermediate sprint. I just saw the opportunity to go behind Remco. I took only one second but it didn’t take me any effort. We’re here also to enjoy the race and this was a nice way to do so. It was actually a harder stage than we thought it would be this morning. Bora did a great job. Tomorrow I’ll train during the rest day and I’ll prepare for the very important stage coming up on Wednesday.”
