In one of the most competitive, talented fields ever to tee it up in the Garden State, Westfield senior captain Colin Summers stood the best among the best.
The Fairfield commit shot a sizzling 7-under-par 63, believed by officials to be the lowest score in tournament history, to win by three strokes over Chatham senior Cole Ekert (66) and Bridgewater-Raritan sophomore Hunter Po (66) at the 86th NJSIAA boys golf Tournament of Champions yesterday at Hawk Pointe Golf Club in Washington Township.
“I’m just so proud of Colin. He has been an outstanding leader for us all season and he has always been an tough competitor and this victory just validated it,” said Westfield head coach Ryan Daly, who has been at the helm since 2012. “He has always been able to elevate his game in the biggest moments. I’m just so happy for him and its just a great way to end his high school career.”
Summers, who played a bogey-free round on the par-70, 6,400-yard layout, started the day on the fifth hole and proceeded to birdie his first three holes. He also had birdies on 11, 13, 14 and 17 en route to becoming the first Westfield individual state champion. In 1948, Terry Brady came in second in the N.J. State Championship for Westfield’s previous best finish.
“I birdied the first three and being under-par is not easy, so I said to myself let’s start at 3-over, so we can continue to fight and compete,” said Summers, who is looking to major in business analytics or economics when he arrives at Fairfield in late August or early September.
“I had games with myself all day trying to not think of the round I was having and I rode momentum and confidence in the last six or seven holes and it just was super satisfying. I knew we (team) had a solid squad after the first couple of tournaments in the season. I was in Florida for a couple of months prior, so I was playing a lot and kind of was warmed up for the season to begin. I never thought I could shoot a 63, but I definitely thought I could win it.”
Summers, who also won the Group 4 individual title over Po, also helped lead the Blue Devils (284) to their first T of C team title by seven strokes over runner-up Chatham (291) and Christian Brothers (293), which was pursuing a fourth consecutive overall title.
“Today was a lot of fun and I had a great group of players with me,” Chatham’s Ekert said. “Playing Hawk Pointe was a treat and although I fell just short of the overall individual title, I was happy with how I played and glad that our team won the Group 3 title.”
