Long, spiraling passes. Amazing leaps to snag pivotal scores. Late-game drama galore.

There’s a hot new sports in Los Angeles and its audience is growing. Well, it isn’t all THAT new, actually.

Their games aren’t played at a multi-level stadium or in front of thousands of cheering fans. They don’t have a huge TV contract. You won’t see home-run trots, slam dunks or 5-minute penalties for fighting.

But you will see the Los Angeles Aviators playing for the love of their sport.

What’s the sport? It’s the American Ultimate Disc League.

The sport was created in 1968 when a group of high school students came together in their New Jersey school’s parking lot. It’s since grown into an organized sport for youth in most states and continues to increase in popularity at the collegiate level.

Michael Kiyoi, who captains the Aviators, learned of the sport while at UCLA. He now makes the drive from his home in Santa Barbara to L.A. Southwest College, the Aviators’ home field.

“There are very, very successful teams at UCLA – both women’s and men’s,” Kiyoi said. “There is a whole national circuit. We try to make it to nationals and win a national championship. The women’s team at UCLA has gone to many national finals and that’s really cool.

Kiyoi was quick to add that the sport isn’t just for adults.

“My hope is to grow the sport for all youth and to match the demographic of each area, especially for people of color,” he said. “In Santa Barbara there is a large Latino population and we have a great youth team that is probably about 70 to 80 percent young Latino students and that’s awesome.”

The rules at the AUDL level are fairly simple.

Games at the professional level are essentially played on football fields, with lower level teams playing on narrower fields. Teams of seven must advance the disc into the end zone but only by throwing it. If a player catches the disc thrown by a teammate, he can only move it forward by passing it. The process continues until a pass is successfully caught in the end zone.

If the disc is caught or knocked down by an opposing player, the possession ends and the other team gets its chance to score.

YouTube channels, Twitter handles, Facebook pages and other social media outlets spotlight AUDL teams and players in the hopes that the sport will continue to become more popular.

Team owner Devin Miller likes the direction in which the sport is moving and has set some pretty lofty goals for its future.

“I want Ultimate to be in the Olympics in 2028,” he said last week. “I want it to be understood so as soon as somebody says they went to the latest Ultimate game, everybody knows what that means and where it was.

“I want it to be as big as the NBA and NFL eventually and I think it has that potential,” he added. “It’s one of the most exciting sports to watch that I’ve ever seen. It’s great. There is so much that it has to offer.”

You can find myriad acrobatic highlights and more information on the league on the Aviators’ website. The team just concluded the current season, but should be posting information about its next round of competition soon.
