LAGUNA BEACH, CA—A fantastic turnout arrived at the Festival of Arts Grounds for Taste of Laguna Food & Music Fest and were treated to a foodie's paradise. Start planning now to attend next year, because you will not want to miss Laguna's grand party for itself.
The opportunity to chat with world-famous chefs from your go-to local eateries is a thrill. Plus you can sample offerings from potential new favorites.
The stellar event also supports Laguna visual artists and musicians. Portraitist Tatyana Zen and surfboard artist Carolyn Johnson were both making pieces in real time at the venue. Musicians offered lessons and artists promised to incorporate winning bidders into paintings through the silent auction.
Mostly, though, it was a chance to give back to the nonprofits that keep the town and its businesses informed, entertained and rolling along: KX FM and the chamber of commerce. Laguna Beach showed its gratitude to both organizations, who had the genius idea to combine their annual fundraisers in 2019. No doubt it will continue as both a Taste of Food & Music for years to come.
But definitely spring for the VIP tickets in 2022, as that first hour of early entry means lines are minimal. Except at Starfish's booth. The line began right at 5 p.m. and continued to grow for hours. Executive Chef Claudia Uribe was rolling sushi nonstop, smiling at the salivating queue as she chatted with patrons and fans.
City Manager Shohreh Dupuis posed for photos with Laguna Beach Police, Fire & Marine Safety. Attendees were eager to discuss emergency preparedness with fire fighters all evening long. Though the timing was a coincidence, the city celebrated the reopening of its beaches on Thursday two weeks after the devastating Orange County Oil Spill.
Ristorante Rumari offered a more nonna-inspired meatball in marinara, which was comforting, tender and tasty. Old World met new in the meatball competition, both quite sublime.
Rib tips and shrimp were front-and-center proteins at nearly every table and booth.
Getting up close and personal with the sous chefs was a treat of another flavor altogether. There was no "kitchen confidential" for Harley and Oliver's Osteria, as you could stroll right behind their prep tables. The band NOVA's sweet bossa nova kept them going strong.
Honorary event chair and executive chef Craig Strong was all smiles—and back in his white coat—presiding at Hotel Laguna's Terra table. While Tatyana Zen was at work on a colorful portrait of Mick Jagger near the entrance to the Pageant of the Masters. Everywhere you went, Laguna Beach's finest were doing their thing for the town they call home.
Stay tuned for the Foodie Award winners and silent auction results.
