Not-so-dazzling debuts, 'killer' mentalities, roster battles and a secret broken leg: 10 Blackhawks observations - The Athletic

Patrick Kane called it “exciting.” Jonathan Toews called it “exciting.” Alex DeBrincat called it “exciting.” Connor Murphy went out on a limb and called it “very exciting.”

Yeah, making a sudden switch from a rebuild to win-now mode — loading up with top-tier talent in free agency and on the trade market — sure is exciting for veteran players who don’t want to be spinning their wheels in their prime.

But what about for the young players who were the focus of that rebuild, who went from everyday players doing their development in the NHL to, most likely, riding buses in the AHL?

“It’s exciting,” second-year defenseman Ian Mitchell said.

Well, OK, then.

“It’s exciting for the team because you always want to be part of a winning team, winning culture,” Mitchell expounded. “It’s just exciting for us young guys to have an opportunity to play on a really good team and fight for that spot. Nothing is given around here, everything’s got to be earned, so it’s just going to make it that much more sweet when you do get that chance and you earn it. As opposed to when there’s not as many quality NHL players ahead of you, it’s a little easier to get into the lineup.”

Mitchell came in with high expectations last season after a strong career at the University of Denver but had an up-and-down season.
