Joe Taylor, Trent Hill dazzle as Chelsea leaves no doubt in win over Schoolcraft - MLive.com

CHELSEA – Don’t look now, but Chelsea’s offense just got scarier.

The Bulldogs were firing on all cylinders Saturday night as they rolled to a 42-21 win over Schoolcraft to move to 3-0 on the season.

Chelsea’s offense found the end zone through the air and on the ground, imposing its will throughout the contest.

First came the dazzling passing plays to Joe Taylor, who carved up another defense this season. Then came Chelsea’s rushing attack led by Trent Hill, who muscled his way through Schoolcraft’s defense in the second half.

Taylor and the passing game their damage in the first half and Schoolcraft had no answer for him as he got behind the defense early and often.

The senior athlete caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Griffen Murphy in the first quarter and then took a short slant pass 90 yards for another score to put Chelsea ahead 28-0 in second quarter.

“Coming into the game we weren’t really sure what Schoolcraft was going to do,” Taylor said. “The first series we went about it kind of looking at what they were doing, and they kind of manned us (on defense) and we knew if they were going to man us, it was going to be a long night for them and we were able to put some points up on them.”

Chelsea’s rushing attack was on display in the second half as Hill, a junior transfer from Ohio, scored touchdowns on runs of 14 and 37 yards in his first game with the same team his older brother, Nick, starred for during his legendary high school career.

“First week being here; I’m pretty excited to be here,” Hill said. “I know this is a school with great tradition and I’m excited to be here.”

On paper, Chelsea was expected to take care of business Saturday even with a short amount of time to prepare for the showdown.

The two teams scheduled each other Thursday after both of their original opponents canceled on Wednesday, leaving the two squads searching for a new game with little time to find one.

So, Division 7 power Schoolcraft (2-1) took on the challenge of facing a Division 3 Chelsea squad that had imposed its will in its first two games of the season and was playing as good as any team in the state in 2020.

“Give them a lot of credit. Hats off to those guys,” said Chelsea coach Josh Lucas of Schoolcraft. “They played their butts off. They’re going to be a problem in D-7.”

With being the favorite, the Bulldogs didn’t waste any time finding success on both sides of the ball.

Defensively, Chelsea made countless plays, forcing three interceptions in the first half, including one that was returned 44 yards for a touchdown by Carson Gray.

Despite allowing a couple big plays in the second half, the Bulldogs' defense once again dominated its opponent and held another star quarterback, this time Grand Valley State commit Alex Thole, in check.

“Our defense did a really good job giving their quarterback some fits with different coverages and things they probably haven’t seen in their league,” Lucas said.

Schoolcraft’s offense struggled against the physical and fast Chelsea defense for the majority of the game but was able to move the ball some in the third quarter as Thole hit Jimmy Downs for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 35-13.

Downs also returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown near the end of the first half as Chelsea took a 28-7 lead into the break. The Eagles were able to find some offensive success in spots in the second half, but the game was already out of reach.

As for the Bulldogs, their dominance on the season continued as they picked up their third victory by 21 points or more.

It was also Chelsea’s third game with 35 or more points for the first time since 2018 when it advanced to the Division 4 state title.

With a strong offense matching its physical defense, the Bulldogs could make another deep playoff run in 2020. As for now, though, Taylor said the team is focused on staying in the moment.

“We’re just going to take it week-by-week and never look ahead,” he said. “We just have to take it week-by-week and day-by-day.”
