INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In his COVID-19 update on Wednesday, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced that Indiana would stop Stage 5 of the “Back on Track” plan because coronavirus numbers continue to climb. The Governor said he will sign an executive order that will take effect on Sunday, lasting until at least mid-December.
Holcomb said, “We are in the midst of a second surge.” After multiple weeks of rising numbers of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, the Stage format is being discarded and the state will now use a county metrics map that focuses on targeted restrictions for counties currently colored orange and red. Bartholomew and all south-central counties are now deemed to be “orange,” with the exception of Decatur County which has advanced to “red.”
The executive order that starts this weekend continues the mask mandate, limits crowd sizes to 20 people in the highest-risk red counties, and restricts crowds to 50 people in the next-riskiest orange counties. It will also limit capacity at all Indiana schools’ sports and extracurricular activities.
The statewide positivity rate for COVID-19 has almost tripled in the last six weeks. Hospitals are now experiencing over 200 new coronavirus cases a day. Indiana recorded another one-day high of 5,156 cases of the disease on Wednesday.
