After dazzling summer, Trey Burke agrees to 3-year contract with Mavs, Dallas’ first move of 2020 free - The Dallas Morning News

The Mavericks first move in free agency is a familiar one.

Trey Burke agreed to a three-year, $10 million contract with the Mavericks after a breakout summer when he transformed from a roster substitute before the NBA’s season restart into a playoff starter.

In the Mavericks’ eight regular-season games in the NBA’s Disney World bubble, Burke averaged 12 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals a game while emerging as their top player off the bench.

In six playoff games, including three starts in place of the injured Kristaps Porzingis, Burke shot 50.8% from the field and 47.1% from three.

The 6-foot, 185-pound point guard entered the summer familiar with the Mavericks’ offense and his teammates because he played 25 games, averaging 9.7 points, with them in 2019 after arriving in Dallas as part of the blockbuster trade for Porzingis.

But the 28-year-old’s surge this summer was a surprise to many because he hadn’t played in an NBA game since Feb. 3, just before the 76ers released him.

Also a surprise: Burke was late to join the Mavericks in the bubble because he tested positive for COVID-19 just after signing his temporary contract this summer and had to quarantine for 25 days in a Dallas hotel.

In discussing that period with The Dallas Morning News in September, Burke reiterated several times how much he wanted to re-sign with the Mavericks.

“Talking to Coach [Rick Carlisle], he let it be known that he loves what I brought to the team, loves the effort I gave in the bubble, and would love to have me back,” Burke said then. “We both understood that it was too early to talk any free agency talk. I kind of leave that to my agent, and to them, but he expressed that he will love to have me back and hopefully they could get something done in the near future when the time comes.

“The feeling is mutual on my end. Like I said, I know it’s a business and things of that nature and on that end will have to get handled and negotiated, but I would love Dallas to be home for me going forward.”

Now Dallas will be home for Burke — again.

He and Jalen Brunson will provide ball-handling depth behind Luka Doncic as the Mavericks aim to win their first playoff series since 2011.
