Sharks prospect Thomas Bordeleau's impressive start to his college career continued with a highlight-reel goal that he'll be hard-pressed to top.
The Michigan freshman toe-dragged a sprawling Wisconsin defenseman before burying a back-hand shot past goaltender Robbie Beydoun to give the Wolverines a 2-1 overtime win over their Big Ten rivals on Friday night.
Bordeleau's dazzling dangles even earned him the top play of the night on "SportsCenter."
“I just tried to read the goalie,” Bordeleau said after the game (h/t The Michigan Daily's Brendan Roose). “ … I’ve kind of tried (that deke) before in practice, but I didn’t plan it ahead.
The 18-year-old, selected in the second round (No. 38 overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft, was one of nine forwards the Sharks picked last month. Bordeleau quickly is establishing himself as one of the organization's most exciting prospects.
The center has scored seven points (two goals, five assists) in his first four games with Michigan, which is tied for the team and conference lead. Known more as a playmaker coming out of the U.S. National Team Development Program, Bordeleau's elite vision has been apparent early on in his collegiate career.
Bordeleau also has flashed an impressive two-way game, even earning the trust of coach Mel Pearson to play on the penalty kill as a freshman. The 5-foot-9 center showed off his short-handed prowess during his collegiate debut a week ago.
“Thomas is really good on faceoffs," Pearson told The Michigan Daily's Jack Kingsley earlier this week. "He’s really good there so we’re gonna put him out there sometimes just to win the faceoff and get off. But he’s a smart player too, and you can see he’s got good speed. He’s got a really good stick, he anticipates well. So he’s a guy who can kill penalties and create some offense by doing that, and some short-handed opportunities.”

It's very early in the 5-foot-9 center's college career, but so far, so good. EP Rinkside columnist J.D. Burke wrote Friday that Bordeleau has been Michigan's best player through four games this season.
Even if he can't score goals every game like his brilliant OT winner Friday night, Bordeleau is a prospect whose career the Sharks will watch with great interest.
