Darling Hill Country towns with dazzling holiday light displays - mySanAntonio.com

Is there anything cozier than a Hill Country town at the holidays? Bundled up against the winter weather (or in Texas' case, wearing light layers to offset somewhat brisk temperatures), walking around quaint town squares, and basking in the glow of millions of tiny twinkle lights - it’s the best way to kick off the Christmas season.

San Antonians don't have to travel far to get to a Hallmark-worthy holiday celebration. In addition to the many events around the Alamo City, it seems nearly every Hill Country hamlet has a special event this time of year.

So, saddle up the reindeer and hit the road for a holly jolly Hill Country time.

Johnson City - Lights Spectacular!
Johnson City’s impressive lights display is so massive that organizers boast you can see it from space. Pedernales Electric Cooperative (the most appropriate sponsor of a holiday lights spectacular ever) turns its headquarters into a brilliant display of more than 1 million LED lights.

The town itself joins in on the cheer, lighting up buildings and trees and offering festive fun such as carriage rides and lamplight tours of Lyndon B. Johnson’s boyhood home. And mark your calendars for November 29, when the Lights Spectacular Lighted Hooves & Wheels Parade marches through this twinkle town.

Boerne - Dickens on Main
Travel back in time to Victorian England (without actually leaving the metro area). Boerne’s famous Dickens on Main kicks off the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 26, with special events every week until Christmas. Watch as Boerne's “Hill Country Mile” transforms into a winter wonderland, with ice carving, street entertainers and vendors, Dickens characters, photos with Santa, and a handmade market to score all your holiday gifts.

Save the date for December 3 and 4, when the 34th annual Weihnachts Parade takes over historic Main Street with more than 100 floats. Other special events include outdoor movies, special shopping nights, and a stocking stroll. Grab the kiddos for Kinder Nights, December 17-19, featuring a downtown cookie crawl, a visit with Santa, a scavenger hunt, and real reindeer.

Wimberley - Holiday Trail of Lights and Tree Lighting in Wimberley
Over the past 14 years, this holiday celebration has blossomed to take over the entire Hill Country town of Wimberley. Stroll through six acres of trail on the EmilyAnn Theatre grounds and take in fun displays and magical moments. Joining in on the celebration is most of the small businesses and restaurants in the downtown area, which transforms from a quaint Hill Country destination into a holiday hamlet each December.
Trail of Lights: December 4-5, 8-12, 15-23, 26 (Lights are turned on for Christmas Eve and Christmas, but there is no service.)

Marble Falls - Walkway of Lights
There are holiday celebrations and then there is Marble Falls’ holiday celebration, which boasts 2 million twinkle lights to create a truly magical memory. Billed as “one of the biggest holiday celebrations in the Highland Lakes,” the Walkway of Lights takes over the city’s Lakeside Park each year. Visitors can take in more than 130 illuminated sculptures as they meander along the walkway, offering an Insta-worthy way to ring in the holiday season.

Other special events this year include meet-and-greets with Santa and his elves on weekends, ice skating, and a Christmas parade. Or, hop in your car and hit the road to see the best Christmas light displays across the Highland Lakes. (Note: Johnson City is only 20 minutes away if you want to make it a real party.)

Austin - Peppermint Parkway
Austin’s Trail of Lights tends to get all the attention when it takes over the city’s landmark Zilker Park with millions of twinkle lights, but Peppermint Parkway is a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hosted at Circuit of The Americas, the event features a mile-long trail of lights, complete with fun characters, festival carols, and even dancing elves. Once you’ve raced down the Peppermint Parkway, ditch the car and enjoy amusement park rides and snacks, a visit with Santa, and go-kart racing.

Insider tip: Consider getting the track lap add-on, which allows you to take your car on the actual Formula 1 racetrack. There is nothing more fun (or funnier) than watching a parade of minivans and sedans trail each other on a professional speedway. Bonus points if you roll your windows down and play racing noises over your car speakers.
