Longwood Takes National Stage at Georgetown Tuesday

Men's Basketball /

The Opening Tip
•    Longwood brings its Big South-leading defense to the nation's capital Tuesday for a 7 p.m. showdown against Georgetown at Capital One Arena.
•    The game will air on Fox Sports 2, marking Longwood's second nationally-televised game this season. The Lancers also played Iowa on the Big Ten Network in the season opener.
•    In addition to scoring defense (60.3 o-ppg.), Longwood also leads the Big South in scoring margin (+14.6), field goal percentage defense (.388), rebounding margin (+9.3) and offensive rebound percentage (.387).
•    Longwood has held six consecutive opponents to fewer than 65 points, which is the program's longest such streak since 1984-85. This year's Longwood team is the lone Lancer squad to surrender fewer than 65 points for more than four consecutive games since the NCAA's adoption of the three-point line beginning with the 1986-87 season.

Last Time Out
•    Old Dominion forward Mekhi Long sank a game-winning layup at the buzzer to lift the Monarchs to a 62-61 comeback win over Longwood Friday at Chartway Arena.
•    Trailing 61-60 after Longwood point guard Justin Hill gave the Lancers a one-point lead with two made free throws, Long corralled a pass from Jaylin Hunter under Longwood's basket and beat the Lancer defense to the glass to bank in the game-winner.
•    Long's game-winning bucket put to rest a back-and-forth end-game sequence that saw the lead change hands eight times in the final 5:45.
•    Longwood overcame a three-point deficit in the final 1:20 when Isaiah Wilkins and Hill hit four consecutive free throws on back-to-back possessions, with Hill earning his go-ahead opportunity after fighting for an offensive rebound and drawing a foul with 9.0 seconds left.

By The Numbers
•    Longwood has shot .486 (54-of-111) from the field in the final 10 minutes of games this season, compared to .439 (130-of-296) in the first 30 minutes. Leslie Nkereuwem is shooting 9-of-11 in the final 10 minutes.
•    Nkereuwem ranks eighth nationally in field goal percentage a .727 (40-of-55).
•    Longwood's opponents are averaging just 60.3 points per game, which ranks tops in the Big South. Only two teams — Iowa and Old Dominion — have scored more than 55 points against Longwood so far.
•    Eight different Lancers have scored in double figures this season, led by Nkereuwem at five such games.
•    Longwood is averaging 35.0 points per game from its bench and has gotten at least 18 points from its reserves in every game. Nkereuwem leads all those bench players, and Longwood overall, with a team-high 12.9 points per game.
•    Longwood point guards Justin Hill and Jordan Perkins have combined for 52 assists and just 16 turnovers through Longwood's first seven games and have Longwood among the Big South's top three in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio.
•    Longwood has assisted on 54.2 percent of all made baskets, which is the third-highest clip in the Big South.
•    Only four Lancers have spent more than two seasons in the Longwood program: senior DeShaun Wade, junior Leslie Nkereuwem & redshirt sophomores Nate Lliteras and Cameron O'Conner. Half of Longwood's 2021-22 roster is made up of newcomers, including five Division I transfers.
•    At 6-4, 220 pounds, Virginia Tech/Wake Forest transfer Isaiah Wilkins is the Big South's top rebounding guard with 6.7 boards per game. He already has a double-double to his credit, along with three games with at least eight boards.

Quotable
"I've been hearing coach Griff preach three things for three years: effort, focus and attitude. If your attitude is right, your mindset is right, you play this game with joy and passion, and you're focused on executing the little details and give 100 percent effort in doing all those things, the results are going to be where they're going to be. That's what he tells us every day – to be focused on the process and the things you can."
— Longwood senior DeShaun Wade on Longwood's culture

Series History
•    Longwood and Georgetown meet for the second time in series history Friday in Washington, D.C.
•    Georgetown won the first meeting in the series 89-53 on Dec. 10, 2012, in Washington. The Hoyas were ranked No. 23 nationally at the time.
•    The last Big East foe Longwood faced was DePaul in the 2019 College Basketball Invitational quarterfinals. The Blue Demons won that game 97-89 in Chicago on March 25, 2019.
•    The last Big South foe Georgetown faced was Campbell on Nov. 24, 2018. The Hoyas won that game
93-85.
