Dazzling New Spot Opens As Old Stone Church Celebrates 150 Years - Patch.com

NEW HOPE, PA — Oldestone, the newest culinary interpretation of New Hope's iconic Old Stone Church, has opened at 15 S. Main Street. Next year, the internationally-recognized landmark will celebrate 150 years since its building.

The steak and seafood restaurant celebrates New American cuisine on its menu and salutes church history in its decor. Oldestone also features an authentic jazz and cocktail bar, open seven days a week.

The space was the former home of Marsha Brown's restaurant, which closed during the pandemic; Brown passed the baton to the new owners, including Wilfer Naranjo who had previously worked for her as a food runner. Oldestone will also feature several signature creole dishes from Marsha Brown's recipe collection.

"We are creating our own unique identity as a restaurant and that is important to us, but we are also following a very well known and famous restaurant and restaurateur and we want to celebrate the building and town's roots with her, as we create a new future moving forward," said Michael Sklar, another one of the restaurant's co-owners along with Vincent and Gaspar Ferrara.

Their restaurant, Oldestone, has a main bar, lounge and private dining room on the first floor, a grand dining room on the second level, and a third level in the former balcony overlooking the dining room that serves as a speakeasy, bar and lounge with a stage for live music.

The space can seat over 250 guests at one time, and features 1950s art deco stylings from top to bottom. Unique design elements include an authentic jazz age bar on the third floor, a speakeasy stage with vintage style microphone, chandeliers seen in the film John Wick 3, church stained glass windows, original church pews and a church pulpit, a 30-foot-tall mural called Redemption, working church bells, a crystal chandelier, and original brick work.

The church tower bells ring every fifteen minutes and on the hour, and after Thanksgiving they will play Christmas music to welcome holiday visitors. The restaurant, which also offers valet parking, is open seven days a week between 5:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. for food, and until 2 a.m. for bar service.

Menu offerings include a raw bar with Seasonal Oysters, little neck clams on the half shell, stone crab claws, jumbo shrimp, and king crab claws — plus the Oldestone Grande Plateaux with a combination of oysters, clams, king crab legs, jumbo shrimp, stone crab claws, octopus salad, gravlax, and smoked muddled whitefish served over crushed ice.

Appetizers include corned beef short ribs with Brussels sprouts slaw and Guinness mustard, fresh vodka-cured gravlax with cucumber on a radish salad and sauce gribiche, traditional lobster and shrimp bisque with a kick of cayenne pepper and baptized with sherry, and a classic caesar salad, among many other offerings. Char Siu chicken with Asian noodle salad and daikon and pickled carrots and Creole-style Jambalaya with crabmeat, shrimp, duck, and andouille sausage in a dark roux with peppers, onions, and rice are some of the entrees. The menu also includes sides and desserts.

Here's a list of the featured cocktails:

  • The Stone Witch: Gin, Lychee Puree, White Cranberry, and Lemon juice garnished with a finely sliced jalapeno pepper
  • The Noire Manhattan: Rye, Carpano Antica Formula, Vigo Amaro, Chocolate & Orange bitters
  • The Art Deco-tini: Vodka, Pear Puree, Guava Puree, white cranberry, Grand Marnier, and Limoncello
  • The Violet Femme: Gin, club soda, St. Germaine, and a side of lime juice for a revelation
  • The Gaspar: Templeton Rye, Fig & Madagascar vanilla syrup, orange bitters, and a splash of club soda served smoking with cherrywood
  • Bee-kind, Rewind: Gin, lemon juice, and honey syrup
  • One in a Melon Spiced mojito: Spiced rum, mint, lime juice, black tea, St. Germaine, and frozen watermelon cubes

  • The New Hope Sazerac: Templeton Rye, Courvoisier, cracked black pepper syrup, and an Absinthe rinse
  • The Thin mint: Chocolate liquor, Stateside vodka, Bailey's, and mint syrup rimmed with crushed mint cookies

While most speakeasys are located underground, Oldestone's speakeasy offers a hidden private and intimate space more than 15 feet above the dining room. Patrons can also enjoy music from the stained-glass-heights.
