Folks who forked out over $100 for a ticket to see Dave Chappelle Wednesday night at Hard Rock Live near Hollywood didn’t get even get to see the entire show. The controversial comedian reportedly stormed off the stage after a man in the audience whipped out a cellphone.
There’s no video of the incident (the guy obviously didn’t sell the footage to TMZ or another gossip outlet — yet) but, according to widespread media reports, Chappelle was not happy, and scolded the fan.
The aborted show was Chappelle’s second in a five-night stand at the Seminole Hard Rock between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The “Half Baked” star takes the stage Friday and Saturday nights at the same 7,000-seat venue inside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Broward.
On Hard Rock Live’s website, the venue states in its Frequently Asked Questions section that select events are “device and electronics free, per the artist’s request.”
That means no recording devices will be permitted, including cellphones, smartwatches, cameras, tablets, laptops and even FitBits. Before entering, guests must leave all their mobile toys secured in Yondr neoprene pouches that will be unlocked as you leave.
“It’s a Celebration B!%?#&S!’ is a jubilant recognition of a golden milestone year for the comedic genius,” reads the show’s description. “Renowned for his unparalleled wit, razor-sharp commentary and fearless approach to tackling life’s most absurd moments, Dave Chappelle promises to ignite the stage with his larger-than-life presence.”
This isn’t the first time the comic’s shows have gone awry. Back in August 2013, during the Comedy & Curiosity Festival in Hartford, Conn., he bailed soon after his set started due to hecklers.
And just last May, Chappelle was attacked onstage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The audience member, who was armed with a replica gun that could eject a blade, was arrested on a felony assault charge. The legendary funnyman was unharmed and continued the performance.
The Hard Rock did not immediately respond to the Miami Herald’s request for comment about the matter.
