Hugo Lloris’ time at Tottenham Hotspur appears to be heading to a close. According to Sami Mokbel at the Daily Mail, Tottenham’s longest-tenured first team player and former club captain is in talks to join Los Angeles FC in MLS when the January transfer window opens.
If this happens, and at this point it sure looks like it’s going to, this would mean the end of 11 years of service for Lloris at Tottenham. Hugo intended to move this past summer, and Tottenham was ready to let him go after signing Guglielmo Vicario as their new starting keeper, but Lloris turned down several moves, including a sentimental return to hometown club Nice because he wanted first team football. Instead he’s spent the first half of this season out of the side, training but not playing.
LAFC at first glance looks like a weird destination for Hugo, but he would be coming in as a replacement for Canadian keeper Maxime Crepeau, who is apparently out of contract. At LAFC, Hugo likely gets a starting job as an experienced former international keeper, a decent (if not Premier League level) wage, plus he and his family get to live in Los Angeles until he decides to hang up his boots. Not too shabby of a deal.
Hugo’s Tottenham contract expires in June, so I can’t imagine Tottenham would ask a fee for him to move. He’s on £100k/wk in wages so this frees up a significant chunk of the wage bill for Spurs that they can put into incoming signings, so just getting Hugo out the door is likely worth it.
This is exciting news for any west-coast Tottenham fans who fancy a trip down to BMO Stadium to see Hugo play in person next season as well. We’ll likely get confirmation from other sources, or from the club, over the next day or so, whenever this deal gets finalized.
Hugo’s been an incredible servant to the club and one of if not the best keeper in Tottenham’s history. But all things must end. Au revoir, Hugo.
