HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Mission Viejo boys soccer team gave up an early goal, but the Diablos then scored two of their own first-half goals and hung on for a 2-1 victory over Edison in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs on Wednesday at Edison High School.

Tyler Oaksen’s header, worthy of a highlight reel, broke a 1-1 tie in the first half and wound up being the game winner.

The goal came on a perfectly placed free kick from Oneal AlmeIda to Oaksen, who lunged forward in the box and headed the ball out of midair and into the goal.

“I just tried to put my head on the ball,” Oaksen said. “That’s what I’ve been trying to do all season and it came in this game. I was getting close game after game in league, and my teammate Oneal put in a great ball and luckily I could just get my head on it and help my team out.”

The Diablos (10-5-2) will play host to No. 3 seed Palos Verdes in a second-round contest on Friday. Palos Verdes defeated St. Francis of La Canada 2-1 in overtime Wednesday.

Edison’s best chance of tying the game came in the second half when Mission Viejo’s keeper was called for an illegal play, which gave the Chargers (14-6-2) a free kick about 5 feet from the goal.

But the Diablos put a wall of players in front of the goal and the Chargers couldn’t get the ball past them.

Both teams came close to scoring in the first eight minutes.

The Chargers, who won the Surf League title, broke the scoreless tie when Luke Slavik caught the Diablos’ keeper out of position and kicked a roller into the goal.

The Diablos, who finished second in the South Coast League behind San Clemente, the No. 1 seed in Division 1, tied the score a minute later on a goal from Joshua Lezama.

Oaksen’s winning goal came less than five minutes later.

“I thought we played with a lot of passion,” Mission Viejo coach Roger Castle said. “I thought we moved the ball well. We kept our composure. We had a bit of luck. That’s football, particularly playoff football.”
