Stud HS pitcher, MLB prospect fans 18 in dazzling, nearly perfect no-hitter - nj.com

In an unprecedented season loaded with great expectations, Chase Petty has been as good as advertised.

Hold that thought ... Maybe even better.

A bona fide athlete who throws a fastball unlike any other - possibly the best in South Jersey history, and maybe in state history for that matter - not setting aside a couple of hours to watch him pitch is like not having turkey on Thanksgiving.

The University of Florida commit, projected to go in the first round of July’s MLB draft, is a sight to see. You can watch all the video you’d like, but seeing the potential up close and personal is something to witness.

Case in point, Wednesday’s effort against unbeaten Millville. It was spectacular and dominant, and he even did some significant damage swinging the bat.

The flame-throwing right-hander fired his second career no-hitter, striking out 18 - including the final 10 batters he faced - and allowing only a two-out walk in the fourth inning as No. 13 Mainland blanked the visiting Thunderbolts 3-0 in Cape-Atlantic League action.

“I couldn’t have done this without my team,” Petty said. “They played defense and made the plays on balls hit in play. And we all hit, we all barreled balls. It was a team win.

“My command was really good and I felt really good with my fastball. My slider was there, by far the best it’s ever been. I threw it where I needed every time. I just felt so comfortable with it. It was on.”

Petty is scheduled to make his third start of the season on Tuesday against visiting Buena. In Mainland’s season opener against No. 2 Holy Spirit, Petty fired a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts. He’s now 2-0, allowed just one hit and sent 31 batters back to the dugout.

“He’s certainly not a tough guy to call pitches for,” Mainland coach Billy Kern said.

Logan Musey was the lone Millville hitter to reach base Wednesday. He was stranded at first as Petty ended the fourth with a strikeout, which started his run of strikeout after strikeout after strikeout to end the game.

“Every time you go up, you have to be short and sweet to the ball. You can’t have a long swing,” Musey said.

Petty’s first no-hitter came as sophomore in 2019 against Holy Spirit in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

“Every time he goes out there, he has an opportunity to do that,” Kern said. “But to actually go out and strike out as many as he did, and even the outs were fairly routine … In terms of his performance, a great first inning with two strikeouts and then he helped himself by hitting a ball as far as I’ve seen hit here in a long time.

“Sitting as close as we are here, you get to see the movement of the pitches. As good as his slider was today, and it was fantastic, his two-seam fastball was running so much that he was getting swings and misses.”

Petty’s two-run blast over the scoreboard in left field were the only runs of support he would need. Luke Sharp’s RBI walk made it 3-0 after the first frame.

“They were both kind of fun,” Petty answered when asked which was cooler - the monstrous blast or his no-hitter.

“(On the home run) He threw it right down the middle and I was like ‘this is mine.’ I jumped on it and did what I did with it.”

From there, it was clear that it would be Chase Petty’s day to shine. He fanned at least two batters in every inning.

“You tip your cap to Chase on the mound. The kid threw well,” Millville coach Dan Fimiani said. “From our side of it, I don’t think we were aggressive enough at the plate.

“There’s no secret as to who Chase is or what he’s going to do when he’s on the mound, but we weren’t aggressive on the fastball and he got us on the secondary stuff. If you strike out 18 times, you’re not aggressive enough at the plate.”

Joe Sheeran collected a double in the sixth for Mainland (5-0), while Brody Levin and Cole Campbell added singles.

“We knew we had a tough opening week,” Kern said. “To get No. 1 against Holy Spirit was big and then pulling one out Friday when we didn’t have our best game against Cherokee was huge. So turning the page and knowing we had (Petty) coming back this week sets your week up to feel good.

“We have a lot of good momentum right now. But as we’ve told the kids, with these back-to-back games, you still have to get off the bus and show up; you still have to play these games.”
