After dazzling debut, Pirates send Kranick back to minors - Yahoo News

Jun. 28—After throwing five perfect innings in his major league debut, Max Kranick is heading back to the minors.

The Pittsburgh Pirates sent the 23-year-old Valley View grad back to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday before starting a three-game series in Colorado against the Rockies. With Kranick heading out, they recalled right-handed pitcher Cody Ponce.

Barring another Pirates player needing to go on the injured list, Kranick must spend at least 10 days in the minor leagues before he can be promoted back to the majors.

Kranick breezed through five innings on just 50 pitches against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, striking out three. He only came out of the game because of an hour-long rain delay that began right after he got the last out of the fifth inning.

After the game, Pirates manager Derek Shelton said he wasn't sure whether Kranick would make his next start with Pittsburgh, but did acknowledge that the team is moving to a six-man rotation.
