My Chemical Romance bassist Mikey Way has shared a sneak peek at his upcoming graphic novel Electric Century.

As seen in Rolling Stone, Way’s new graphic novel is tied to his recent self-titled album by his side project, also titled Electric Century.

Way wisely reunited with co-writer Shaun Simon for Electric Century – the pair previously worked together with great results on the DC Comics/Vertigo project Collapser. Toby Cypress handled the art for the new graphic novel.

Electric Century follows Johnny Ashford, a former sitcom star now struggling with addiction who begins seeing a hypnotherapist. The treatment leads to Ashford reliving his childhood along the Atlantic City boardwalk in the 80’s.

Prone to addiction however, Ashford soon finds himself hooked on the hypnotic trips. Eventually his girlfriend lands in this unreal version of Atlantic City alongside him, and the two must find an escape in order to save their lives.

The teaser excerpt sees Ashford in the middle of one of his hypnotic spells, happily eating ice cream and attending a rock gig. The artwork is stunning, a psychedelic-tinged surreal landscape.

Mikey Way explained to Rolling Stone that Electric Century “speaks a lot about addiction and nostalgia. It’s not just about substance addiction in the modern age, as people are addicted to tons of different things — technology, validation, possessions etc. People also find themselves lost in the past and craving it. I’m guilty of this myself.”

Simon, Electric Century’s co-writer, added his take on the graphic novel: “The great thing about the album is that it doesn’t tell a single story,” he said. “Each song is its own story that can be interrupted by the listener.

For me, it’s either a word or phrase — sometimes just the music of a verse or chorus, that stands out and conjures up imagery. If you put the record on in the background when reading the book, it’ll set the mood to the world you’re diving into.”

Electric Century is out now through Z2 Comics.
