Trickers, tumblers give dazzling performances at national event in Southgate - Southgate News Herald

Although almost everyone who attended the recent NEO: Detroit gathering at Downriver Gymnastics were participants, it’s easy to see how this event could quickly transform into a spectator sport.

The three-day event brought in some of the best trickers, tumblers and free-runners together from all over the country to the Southgate gym during the weekend of June 25.

The event combined martial arts and gymnastics, where athletes performed kicks, flips and twists in a laid-back atmosphere. “Tricking” is described as an art form that combines skills from many styles, like tumbling, taekwondo, capoeira, wushu and contemporary dance.

Alex Kerwood landed three consecutive double twisting skills in a row for his first time ever. Tricking refers to this as “dub dub dub” and has been performed by less than 100 trickers worldwide. Kerwood is from Philadelphia, but has lived and trained in Colorado for several years. Prior to the event, organizers said their goal was to give the tricking community a place to connect, share information and learn from each other. Based on the event’s success, they did all that, and more.

Co-hosts Matt Milhoan and Sam Caspio have been throwing this event for nearly 10 years and it has become the largest tricking event in the United States.

In partnering with Downriver Gymnastics, they said they took the event to the next level, making it one of their biggest events to date.

Milhoan said that more than 250 athletes attended the NEO Gathering at Downriver Gymnastics. Guests participated in workshops, open training sessions, heat-to-head battles and other contests.

Guests traveled from as far away as California and Oregon to attend NEO. Nearly 60% of guests stated on their ticket purchases that they had never attended a NEO Gathering prior to this one.

Milhoan and Caspio said they were elated with how smoothly the event ran. This being their eighth major tricking event, they expressed their gratitude to their staff for helping keep the wheels turning smoothly.

Although spectators were welcome to watch the athletes, the vast majority came to participate.

Kelli Cook, owner of Downriver Gymnastics, said a majority of the athletes were men, but approximately 30 women also participated.

If you’re thinking that this looks like an event for mostly younger people (and only those who are in top physical condition), you would be right. Most athletes who participated in NEO: Detroit were in their late teens, through their late 20s.

Cook said the organizers are planning to make this an annual event.

“It was by far the best event they have had,” she said. “They are hoping by next year that it will again become an international event, bringing people in from Asia and Europe, as it has in years past.”
