A talking yellow sponge took the cartoon world by storm when “SpongeBob SquarePants” debuted in 1999.
“It was on in my house ad nauseum in both of my kids’ lives,” said Tony Marino, co-founder of Stage Right performing arts school and professional theater company in Greensburg.
Stage Right’s Student Company will ride the continued wave of the show’s popularity when it stages “The SpongeBob Musical” Feb. 26-28 in the Science Hall Theatre at Westmoreland County Community College.
Performances will be available to both in-person and livestream audiences.
“It’s a brand new title, which means we are all discovering it together,” Marino said. “We all love the cartoon, and all of that humor is in this script — but better still, the musical numbers are flat-out phenomenal.
“Some of our kids knew (the cartoon) and some didn’t, but once they learned the script, everybody embraced it,” he said. “It’s fun, it’s funny and it has a great message too, of optimism, of can-do, of don’t let people underestimate you.
“To see Patrick the starfish brought to live on stage is just priceless.”
Based on the Nickelodeon animated series, the show premiered in Chicago in June 2016. It opened on Broadway in December 2017 and earned 12 Tony Award nominations.
The plot follows SpongeBob, Sandy, Patrick, Squidward and Mister Krabs as they attempt to save Bikini Bottom from an erupting volcano.
The title character is played by Joe Gongaware of Greensburg, while his faithful sidekick Patrick is played by Ben Federico of Latrobe.
A group of live session musicians will play the score of music by David Bowie and Brian Eno, Panic at the Disco, Cyndi Lauper, The Plain White T’s, Sara Bareilles, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, John Legend, They Might Be Giants and the Flaming Lips.
Choreography is by Renata Marino.
Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26-27 and 2 p.m. Feb. 27-28. A limited number of socially distanced seats will be available and audience members will be required to wear masks.
Cast members, ages 8-18, also will be in masks and shields and will be socially distanced.
“The theater is large, so you will feel safe,” Marino said. “We hope a lot of people will come out in person. We have a big group of kids just desperate to perform.”
In-person tickets are $20, or $12 for students. Streaming fee is $15.
