Whether you're a sports fan or not, there's no doubt that the eyes of the world were firmly fixed on Super Bowl Sunday this weekend - as much for its infamous star-studded pre-match and halftime shows (a tradition that stretches back to 1991) as it was for its battling American Football teams.
There may have been fewer fans attending the live match than usual, thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but the pre-recorded entertainment was still a glittering affair, with a line-up that included The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, Billy Idol, Joan Jett and, for the first time in NFL history, a poet. Amanda Gorman, to be precise, the 22-year old National Youth Poet Laureate who garnered international attention when she recited her poem, The Hill We Climb, during last month's presidential inauguration ceremony.
For her pre-game recording, Gorman shone in an embellished ice-blue Moschino coat and luminous pearl headband as she performed a moving tribute to three honorary team 'captains' —an educator, an ICU nurse manager and a Marine veteran who volunteers with the Wounded Warrior Project - with a piece entitled Chorus of the Captains.
As at the inauguration, Gorman kept her jewellery pared-back but impactful - a key tactic for a performer who uses graceful body language and hand gestures alongside rhythmic words to deliver her messages. This time, she chose a 14kt yellow gold and crystal quartz Secret Diamond Initial ring and an elegant pair of 14kt yellow gold and diamond Half Moon earrings, both by New York-based label Mateo.
Born and raised in Jamaica, Mateo (AKA Matthew Harris) is a self-taught designer who founded his brand in 2009, initially with a focus on men's jewels, before relaunching as a women's fine jewellery brand in 2014. His sleek, minimalist pieces are now worn by the likes of Rihanna, Michelle Obama, Anne Hathaway and Zendaya.
"Amanda is an inspiration and the ideal Mateo woman: intelligent, modern, strong and someone who aims to uplift and create a better world," Mateo tells us, when asked how he feels about Gorman wearing his designs. "I can not thank stylist Jason Bolden enough for truly being a friend and a long time supporter of the brand."
With online searches for 'yellow coats' apparently surging by 1,328 per cent following Gorman's appearance in a sunflower-hued Prada coat at the inauguration in January, the jeweller can certainly expect many more new fans and supporters in the days to come.
