PAGE – Not only can the words brilliant, shining and dazzling describe Saturday’s weather conditions, but they’re also apt words to describe the performances of the Sand Devils sports teams last week.
Girls soccer
It was the Sand Devils vs. the Dust Devils on the soccer field.
The Sand Devils girls and boys soccer teams played their second games of the season against the River Valley Dust Devils.
The girls soccer team is now 2-0 after defeating Bourgade Catholic 2-0 in their opening game, and the River Valley Dust Devils 2-1 in their second game.
In last Saturday’s game against River Valley, freshman Anastasia Christiansen tied the game 1-1 when she scored her first goal as a high school player. Then, in dramatic fashion, senior Tatum Reynolds scored the game-winning goal with less than 2 minutes on the clock.
Head Coach Ben Dalton is happy with the way his team is improving.
“We did a lot better with our possession, and varying our attack Saturday, and our defense is playing very strong,” Dalton said. “We had great play from all our players. It was definitely a team win.”
The girls soccer team is about half as large as other years. Most years the team has about 35 players, this year they have 17.
“But every single player contributes on the field,” Dalton said.
Dalton said his team has a secret weapon, junior Abby George who starts the game as the team goalkeeper and finishes the game playing mid-field. As midfielder she contributed two assists leading to two goals.
The girls soccer team will play two or three games each week for the duration of the season.
Boys Soccer
The boys team crushed the Dust Devils 7-2 Saturday, bringing their record to 1-1 for the season.
Jose Gutierrez scored three goals, Daniel Blackwell scored two, Kiko Mejira scored two and Ashton Penrod scored one.
For Blackwell and Penrod, it was their first goal scored at the high school level.
Boys soccer head coach Ryan Palizzi was encouraged by what he saw from his team’s first week of action.
“We’re getting a lot of good play from our new players,” he said. “We produced a lot of offense Saturday, but I’m even more impressed with how we’ve played defensively.”
Palizzi has been particularly pleased with senior Mac Anderson. The success he’s showing on the field is all the more impressive given that it’s Anderson’s first time playing soccer. Anderson is normally on the baseball field, but since this year’s baseball season has been postponed because of COVID-19 shakeups, he’s opted to spend some time on the soccer field. And he’s recruited several other baseball players to join him.
“He’s a natural born leader, and we need that on the field right now,” Palizzi said. “He’s playing great on both offense and defense.”
The boys soccer team has a very busy month ahead. Playing two to three games per week, they’ll have more games than they’ll have practices.
Girls Basketball
At this point in the season, only hyperbolic metaphor can describe the sheer dominance of the Lady Sand Devils over their opponents. Like a snowplow vs. snowflake, or a tsunami vs. palm tree.
With five games under their belt, the undefeated Lady Sand Devils have outscored their opponents 319 to 105. With such domination, all of Head Coach Ryan Whitehorse’s players are getting a lot of minutes on the court.
In a busy week of play, the Lady Sand Devils defeated Fountain Hills 75-15 Tuesday, El Capitan 63-15 Thursday, and Northwest Christian 76-18 Friday.
Boys Basketball
The boys basketball team are now 3-2 for the season, after garnering two wins and a loss last week.
The Sand Devils started the week with a 46-55 loss against Fountain Hills but finished the week with two wins. The first win came Thursday night against El Capitan (60-42), followed by a 62-44 win over Northwest Christian on Friday night.
The Sand Devils are getting steady production from its returners, senior Robert Smith (1), senior captain Stuart Sandall (34) and senior Jonah Holiday (25), but the team has gotten a real boost from sophomore point guard Orlandon Yazzie (3) and senior point guard Dahntay Dugi (15).
Yazzie is a respected shooter. He put up 15 points against El Capitan. Dugi transferred to Page from Kayenta-Monument Valley High specifically to play basketball after MV canceled its season due to high rates of COVID-19 occurring in the Navajo Nation.
“It’s my senior year. I couldn’t go out without making some noise,” he said.
And Dugi, a welcome addition to the Sand Devils line-up, is making some big noise. He put up 11 points against Fountain Hills, 15 against El Capitan and 13 against Northwest Christian.
The Sand Devils are also seeing some great results from another unexpected source, junior Hunter Richardson (20). Richardson normally spends his winters in the wrestling room but committed to basketball this season when it wasn’t sure if there would be a wrestling season this year (wrestling season held its first match Feb. 9 against Mogollon).
The Page Unified School District is livestreaming all boys and girls basketball home games on its website, pageud.org and on its YouTube page. You can find all sports schedules on page high school’s athletics page at phs.pageud.org/athletics.
