The documentary “M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity” offers a look at the Dutch artist’s intricate works, including “Day and Night.”

We’ve all seen his intricate, geometric interlocking patterns on placemats, mugs, posters and neckties. But many may not know that these ubiquitous designs are the creations of the renowned Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher who never wanted or appreciated the commercialization of his extraordinary work.

The 1960s and ‘70s counterculture inexplicably embraced Escher’s precise black-and-white renderings as trippy fantasia. Without his permission, this work was often reproduced in Day-Glo colors. Escher, who was born in The Netherlands in 1898 and died in 1972, was aghast to find a drawing from 1933 reprinted “in colors so shrill they hurt your eyes.”

Robin Lutz’s new documentary, “M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity,” now streaming from the Jane Pickens Theater, is a revelation for fans of Escher and newbies, alike. Lutz’s film brings Maurits Cornelis Escher’s dazzling work to life as it provides an insightful look into his methods and psychology. The narration is solely Escher’s own words, through voluminous writings and letters recited with gusto by British actor, Stephen Fry. (Read More)
